I have a 2007 Octavia Combi (TDI 2.0) bought in 2011 and it came from the factory with the factory "sports" option meaning it had some interior extras like the three-spoke wheel in leather, plus it was lowered compared to the stock version. Now that the right-side front spring has broken I'm hoping to find myself a replacement spring (or the complete shock absorber/spring unit) but I can't figure out what part differs between my car and the stock one so that I get a matching part. Is it a different spring, shock absorber or both? Does anybody here know?

Probably both. The lowered height comes from the spring plus they are probably different rate to standards. If it is the spring that is broken, that is what you will need to replace as a pair. The sport suspension with larger disc brakes is normally a 55mm front strut. 

 

The shocks are separate so you could leave or you can do at the same time if they are getting on. The colour marking stripes on the springs give an indication together with option codes from the vehicle.  

 

Probably easiest to call genuine Sokda parts dealer with your VIN and get the proper part number and price.

From what I can tell, 'sports' suspension gets a different spring, shock and bump stop compared to normal suspension.

 

As @TheClient suggests, a dealer should be able to provide the correct part number
