Skoda Superb 1.8 DSG Low Beam Headlight Failure

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I purchased a used 2010 Skoda Superb 1.8 TSI DSG elegance with a mileage of 1,06,000kms 9 months back in India. When I purchased there was indication of light bulb failure. Fortnight ago, the right side low beam xenon turned orange; 5 days later it totally failed.

The initial diagnosis given by the Company service centre was failure of light bulb. So I ordered a couple of Osram Night Breakers D1S 35W from powerbulbs UK. Now another mechanic at the same service centre mentioned that controller for the light is gone and it will cost $240. This issue was informed to the previous owner as well but they chose not to replace it.

I am really not sure what is the main issue. Light bulb turning orange seemed like an indication of failed bulb. Is the controller that they mentioned same as ballast? The low beam unit adjusts its direction in the Autohead lamps mode.

I can replace the lights. But I am not sure where the controller is. If anyone can share the pic of the controller / ballast (if they are same) it will be of great help. Don't want to take it to the workshop again as I have already spent close to $1200 in the last 5 months, replacing Timing belt, Ignition coils, etc

I am yet to do a swap test on the xenons to eliminate the light bulb failure.

Anyone with similar experiences.

Thanks

Rahul

Both the xenon ballast and AFS controller are attached to the underside of the headlight. The correct way to access them is to remove the front bumper.

You should be able to switch parts from one side to the other to figure which are at fault. It'll probably help to use VCDS to read out diagnostic codes and to tests on the headlight motors.

It does sound like a bulb or ballast issue rather than an AFS module failure.

Try the bulbs first, you've already bought them and at the current mileage replacing them would probably be prudent anyway.

Thanks for the quick revert langers2k. I just hope it is bulbs only as I can just swap them. I will check if someone has the VCDS module locally in Hyderabad and run a diagnostic.

I am waiting for the bulbs to arrive before I open the Headlight. Right now since my drive is mainly only within the well lit city limits, I am managing.
