1st car for new driver ?

Featured Replies

OK, first off,  It;s not for me it's for my eldest  who's just passed his test  :D:D

Honest,,  i run a 3.0 flat six 4x4 :D,  so a 1.3 FWD non PAS  has very little interest,

Well apart from the mechanical bits ;)

Been to look at a 1.3 Felicia today,

Its not the best but here goes

1.3 popular on a W plate.

Body is a bit scabby with tin worm on the rear arches.

it starts and runs ...

slight pull to the left when driving, but no worse than a normal car on camber.

Its got no PAS, so a slight bit of dead feel in the straight ahead position ..... hw much is normal?

Corners well.   Brakes are perfect, stops in a stright line,

no clutch slip from 30mph roll on, but isnt the fastest at pulling away   but is quite nippy ;)

4 brand new tyres

All reciepts for work done from day 1  - service history etc

Now the questionables

Tickover is ok, but every so often dips then recovers, as though something is switching  in an out.

Temp gauge not working , unpluging and reconnecting got some movement, to 70, but slow to move from there.

The header tank has coolant circulating  and is hot.

The fan cuts in and out,   so i'm guessing the temp sensor is on its way out or dead :D

Now the potential problems

in 2011, it shows as overheated during the MOT  - low coolant.

and play in the steering rack

nothing since ..

Last MOT it failed on emmisions

Exhaust emissions Lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits (7.3.D.3)
Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content at idle excessive (7.3.D.4)
Rear Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases sdilencer (7.1.2)

I'm guessing the exhaust was fubarred

Now the 64,000 dollar question.

It only done a few hundred miles since the last MOT  - but it runs out at the end of the month.

There open to offers on the asking price so i asked if the would re-mot, and we,d give  the asking price.

they refused, but they agreed to knock £50 off the asking price.

provisionally they've agreed the sale if my son likes the test drive.

Do we go for it ...    worst case we spend £500 on Mot repairs for a years motoring ..

Best case it goes straight through.

or is the tickover symptom a warning of somthing else? more expensive

There's lots of information you failed to share with us. The most obvious: the mileage. Photos missing too. If you want a decent answer, show us what you see. Price? Missing. Budget? Missing. Etc.

Based on your (lack of) information I'd say look for a better maintained Felicia. It's your money, it's your decision.

My sons budget is low  - costs to put any small car on the road are  around £2150 for the first year -  taking £1000 for the car  £1000 insurance & 150 road tax

Most of whats in the £750 - £1000 price range needs a cambelt, thats anywhere from £150 to £300  depending on make.

the Polo he's just looked at was £795 and needed a cambelt  (overdue) & 2 x tyres within 1000 miles

and  the brakes given a good strip and clean.   The dealer would drop the price by £95, but with a steady stream of new drivers, its an easy market.

It would have been over £1000  with cambelt, tyres & brake work.

The Skoda, on the other hand has no cambelt, is going for a song, drives fine, has 4 new tyres, & brakes in a straight line fan cuts in and out, heater works etc

The only issue i could see was the temp gauge not working, and the idle dropping then comming back up,   looking on here i'd say its thermostat related.

works case if we take the car and its a lemon, i'm   £115 out of pocket.

At such a low price he could afford to pay £500 to put it through the mot, and get a years motoring out of it

:o Give me a break...

The legislators have waaay too much free time on their hands therefore everything is heavily regulated. It might have to do with the normal British way of life but in here such overzealous rules wouldn't stand for a day.

Now, given the history of the car, I suspect it was neglected for financial reasons by previous owners. What I fail to understand is this: why do you need our advice when you have all data available and all options on the table? As I've said, it's your decision.

Great,

You join a forum to ask a question about a marque youve had little exposure to, and you get set upon by the resident troll!

I'm quite capable of reading an MOT sheet  and understandng why items failed.

What i was trying to establish is were there any foibles associated with the felicia model that  may be the reasons for the MOT failures.

Your sarcastic comments are neither wanted or welcomed.

I'm guessing that the thermostat is either stuck open or has been removed hence the temperature guage not rising.

As for idle possibly a dirty throttle body.

As for rust on the rear arches i would be aware of possible rust else where.

The (MOT) 'legislators' are just reporting what is required by law. The 'questionables' are what the OP is interested in and this is why helpful advice is being asked for! The MOT (test) only informs of the problems and not causes!

Hopefully all further posts from hereon in will be on topic, constructive and respectful.

You may be right, the gauge moves to 70 and then stops.

Ive looked on ebay and can pick up an oe thermostat pack quite cheaply

Once its through the MOT on saturday, and we can see what we have to do we can factor that into the work

Interstingly on the second test drive, it didnt hunt at all, it just ticked over quite nicley

No problems appeared evident on the journey home.

The couple he bought it from, want to know the outcome of the MOT :)

Went through the paperwork ,  all recipets from & including original purchase to last year, full service history to 2014 (50K miles)

All MOTS. emmisions  history etc.

All hand books,  service centre book,  radio instructions, quick start quide , & the envelope with the  stereo removal tools in it!

Well, an update to the topic.

The Skoda failed it's MOT :(

Corrosion in a prescribed area   - rear wheel arches / seatbelt mount points ...

Cost to fix ..£120

No Advisories  -

The emmisions were spot on, so i think its the temp sensor  i'll get one on order in a couple of minutes...

Its just remove the circlip  - pull out sensor  - refit sensor  refit circlip ??  does it loose coolant at all?

mart

Yes that's correct,  you probably will loose some coolant so best doing it with the engine cold.

I'm afraid I'm more inclined to agree with each passing moment of late.

Most, most of us are more inclined to offer a balance. However, we are an international site and do welcome all, from all. Different perspectives are interesting, but should respect we're over 75% uk based.

I also made a rod for my own back when I set about being inclusionary over exclusionary. Although with enough prodding, even a sedated bee's nest will eventually come to it's senses.

I also had similar thoughts about an old felly, spoke to a member here, we discussed it, sounded the pro's and con's.

Only when written out did the reality and decision become clear, for me it was a no. It seems on this you have a lot of information and knowledge. I think in this age, condition, needs to be a gut, or a gamble on future expenses. But it will be a good experience for your lad. Some breakdown cover ;) if it passes the MOT.

HTH.

Genuinely please for you and the lad, I remember my dads Felicia nice little car prompted me to have 4 Skoda's since,

if you proceed with the welding get the car checked front to back, a few extra quid now may save a failure next mot time, it's always best to be proactive with rust than reactive ( and cheaper )

hope all goes well and you end up with a tidy car

  • Author

Car was welded,

Coolant temp sensor changed,

Car was washed, paint cut, polished, waxed,  rain X'd and new wipers fitted.

An Hour and a quarter ago, my eldest set off on his first drive home in his new car ...  Eeek!!!  .... (He's just phoned me to say he arrived home safely :) )

He has breakdown & recovery ... too

Just going to do a coolant change next week,  it was running at about 100c according to my lad when he called me, and it went to 110c when he nipped out a bit later for fuel

didnt hit the red ;) . I know the fan works, and the ccolant was on the weak side, so a new stat unit, flush & refill wont go a miss
