Some questions = 2.0 FSi Auto

Featured Replies

Having owned my Octavia II for a few months now and just completed the family holiday (800 miles in 7 days) I am very pleased with how it performs... BUT -

It seems to dump itself into 3rd gear when slowing down, changes smoothly otherwise and doesn't always do it and has no logic as to when it will do it other than "when slowing down". So I'm thinking a fluid change may help, it has done 66k and to best of my knowledge has never had an ATF flush. Which leads to my first question...

IT is a 6sp Auto JUH code, it doesn't appear to be DSG but I will stand to be corrected. Has anybody a "how to" or a simple procedure to follow for to do a couple of sump dumps / service / filter change on this box? Obviously with no dipstick it must have some sort of level bung?

Second question... It is a 2.0 FSi engine BVY code. I noticed on the motorway the temp gauge sitting at around 70ish degrees, I was towing a trailer, family of 4, 60 mph with aircon on. With any other car I would say thermostat was stuffed but I know modern engines car run cooler / efficiently. What I want to ask is, is this normal behaviour for these engines or do I need a new stat?

Thanks in advance

Andy

Neither sound normal to me.

It is a 09G box with a torque converter based on googling.  3rd gear downshifts sound like a problem. I suppose change the ATF (check you manual and make sure you use genuine or an equivalent vw oem standard certified alternative),  but I'm not sure that will be it. Have you checked DTC codes by a specialist garage or member with VCDS and see if anything is recorded on any car engine or sub systems incl. transmission?

I would say the thermostat is stuck open. You will notice even more in winter if it is. Could be a faulty gauge or sender unit to but my money with thermostat.  Engine is designed to operate at 90c plus, so won't be getting the economy you perhaps could, engine not operating in optimum temp range probably not great longer term or on other systems that may rely on optimum temps. How longs has it been like it though, probably ages if it was like it at your purchase!

Also, having just typed that I'm just thinking whether your low temp is playing a part of the shift parameters. It may not be helping!

Do a bit of googling, from what I read on type 09G boxes they can be temperamental. Problems seem to be electronic or valve bodies most commonly. It seems to take a long time to adapt to different driving styles if what was written in one forum was accurate. I have no first hand experience, only with DSG semi autos.   A transmission reset / adaption may help in the long term (if this is possible) but it may make things even more jerky in the short term. Something you could ask a vw specialist or dealer about though.

See if anyone else comes back with anything better here.

Thanks TC.

No codes recorded via VCDS (SteveD on here) it very rarely does the 3rd gear thing but has been doing it since we got the car. Around 6 mths ago, didn't happen for about the 1st 6 weeks or so.

Temp has always been perfect thats why I was wondering was it to do with the aircon and the motorway speeds. Will def need to try a stat first.

I think I may have seen O9G on the sticker so I will go check that. Any DSG's I've seen usually have DSG on the gear selector so thats what I'm basing my opinion on, also the filter housing isn't on the top of the box.

Yes, I would replace the stat for starters.

Probably the fluid change too for second starters.

I was agreeing with you it will be a 09G box and definitely not a DSG. The other things you have said confirm it.

Search 09G gearboxes and ATF fluid change and or "shifting faults"  and "reset" and "adaption". I haven't looked at the fluid change aspect, but like you said there is probably a drain plug and an overflow level plug.  Faults like that 3rd gear random downshift can be more prominent if the car is not up to temp due to clearances varying with temp, so a thermostat may help it as well.  As is the case with Skoda, that transmission is shared across a number of VAG marque vehicles including Audi A3, if I remember correctly,  although the TCM electronics control and transmission cooling are often different adaptions but things like draining procedures and drain plug locations should be the same....

Edit: It wasn't a particularly common engine or transmission combination in the UK for Skodas (esp compared to other options) so you may not find there are a lot of hands on experiences of it on here.... You never know though....

Looking at some pages I had left open after posting,  I am thinking the transmission uses the snorkel as per DSG transmissions to determine level.  It is a bit of a faff, you have to overfill,  ,shift the transmission through gears. Start engine, let the fluid in the trans get to prescribed temp, which in posts I read was 40C and then open the drain plug again with the snorkel in place until fluid is not running out.

You can fill through a fill plug set up or though the drain plug with a special or improvised adaptor.

Also, seems you have to drop the transmission pan and clean out and replace a filter inside the transmission. There are a lot of different ATF specs, you need to be careful to get the correct type. From what I read I think it "may be" G 055 025 A2. But double check your manual and/or with Skoda.

So you'll have a shopping list of things to get together for the ATF job. Including new pan gaskets, filter, fluid, drain plug, fill plug gasket or seal, piping, fill adaptor..

There are a few guides and posts on how to do it but with the major hosted images player policy change,  there are a lot of good guides that had brilliant photos that now don't have any photos....Really annoying.

Interested to hear how you get on once you've eventually tackled it and if it is like how I am describing.

Thanks for all the info TC, car has 68,500 miles on it so I will probably attempt this at 70k with the service. I shall report my findings!
