Do I need crossovers?

Featured Replies

Been having a nightmare with my current speaker upgrade to my Octavia Mk2 VRS. I bought two pairs of JBL speakers online and the adapters to fit them. All was going well untill I looked in the boxes for the crossovers and discovered to my abject horror that they had sent me the wrong speakers. Both were JBL, so I hadn't noticed. And by the time I did, I had chopped the wires up and glued the tweeters into the door cards. I'm running the speakers off a Kenwood head unit putting out 4x50W, so the speakers are still okay from that point of view, but it seems that while most component speaker kits come with crossovers, buying them separately at a reasonable price is next to impossible. So I guess what I'm wondering is, do I need them?

The original set up (Stream MP3 and OEM speakers) just runs a single line to the mids and passes this along to the tweeters, which I guess have a small crossover of sorts built into them. I did notice that the wire that came with the JBL tweeters has a small capacitor in it, but is this a crossover? And if so, will it do? I've been scouring the web and YouTube to try and get some kind of answer to this, but am still drawing a blank.

And if worse comes to worse, can I rip it all out and send it back anyway? What I paid for cost £20 a set more than what turned up, so I do feel like I might have a case even though I didn't notice the model number was different on the box (and didn't go through it to look for the crossovers before I got going).

Any help or advice would be deeplyu appreciated.

Have you got model numbers for what you ordered and what you received?

Are you 100% sure you didnt get crossovers?

Most entry level component sets dont have crossovers as seperate units now. They just fit capacitors in the cabling which do similar job but on the cheap

The item I ordered was two sets of JBL GT7-6c 16.5cm 150W component speakers. http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/speakers/component-systems/6-5-inch-comp-17cm/jbl-gt7-6c-16-5cm-150w-component-speakers

The item I received was two sets of JBL Stage 600CE 16.5cm 2-Way Component Speakers 150 Watts. http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/speakers/component-systems/6-5-inch-comp-17cm/jbl-stage-600ce-6-5-300w-component-speakers

As you can see, what I ordered comes with two separate crossover boxes. The ones they sent have no such boxes. It may well be that the capacitor on the cables for the tweeters are effectively crossovers. From what I've been able to find online, at these prices it's unlikely that the boxes on the other set would consist of much more than this (perhaps a single capacitor for both mids and tweeters?). I guess I just wanted to know how big a deal this would be. I do appreciate that this is all cheap stuff, and that a proper setup would include amps, etc, so I'm not overly bothered unless there is going to be a big difference in the end result. There is certainly a BIG difference already over the stock paper-cone speakers, and you can hear the difference clearly as I've only done the front doors so far.

Firstly they sent you an item which is cheaper than what you paid.

Even these would be better with an external amp but regards the cap then yes, that cap is your crossover.

It won't cause problems no as it's what it's designed for

So it turns out they sent me the right speakers after all because what I got is the "updated" version. According to the customer services chap the crossovers are built in. And, of course, I got a refund of £40.00.

Finished installing everything today and the improvement is incredible. Part of this is owing to the fact that both rear mids were seized up completely. Also did a little sound proofing while I was at it.

I had to cut off the lip around the edge of the tweeter. Used superglue to hold it in place, then did a dap of plastic welding with the soldering iron to hold it, and covered the whole thing in epoxy. I don't think they'll be falling off nay time soon.

Also, the days of the "use once and throw away" panel clips appears to be over. I picked these up at my local Skoda dealership and they don't break when popped back out.
