Tailgate has stopped auto-locking

Featured Replies

My tailgate has the auto-lock facility whereby it (alone) can be opened by a single press of the middle fob button, and then when the tailgate is slammed shut, it auto-locks.

Or it used to until a week ago. It still opens OK on the middle fob button, but when I shut the tailgate, although the indicators blink, it is not locked. If I test the lock and open the tailgate, the alarm starts. I then have to lock the car using the lock fob button.

The car is still under warranty for a few weeks, but I wondered if there was any quick easy fix known for this problem to avoid a trip to the dealers?

Thanks in anticipation.

My first thoughts would.be a break in the wiring harness as it passes through the trunking

So the car locks normally with the unlock and lock  button so it could point to a body control module issue

If you have only a few weeks left get it in asap

I agree with Malcster.  It is not unknown for a wire to break due to the continual flexing caused by opening and closing the tailgate.

But if this were the case with yours, I would expect the lock to be inoperative whichever fob button was used.

I agree it could be a faulty module.  Get it booked in - or at least reported and acknowledged - ASAP.

Belated thanks to malcster and Robjon for your replies

Car was in the Skoda main dealer garage yesterday. At first I was told that this was the designed behaviour. To paraphrase the technician " the boot doesn't lock itself for 30 seconds after the tailgate is closed, this allows you to open it again if you have forgotten to take out something from the boot." I challenged this as when I first had the car, the tailgate locked as soon as it was shut and the indicator lights blinked. He agreed to have a look and recoded the system so that it now locks instantly. No charge was made for the work.

Interestingly I looked at the owner's manual after visiting the garage, and found it says: " After closing the boot lid, it is automatically locked within 1 second and the anti-theft alarm system is activated".  The manual also states,  in a section titled Delayed locking of the boot lid that : "The period after which the boot lid is locked automatically can be extended by a specialist garage. After activation of delayed locking, the boot lid can be opened again after closing within a limited period. Delayed locking can be deactivated by a specialist garage...".  This last action is what was done for me yesterday.

The manual then gives a caution: "There is a risk of unwanted entry into the vehicle before the boot lid is locked automatically. We therefore recommend locking the vehicle with the symbol button (lock) on the remote control key".

It seems therefore that Skoda don't recommend delayed locking for the very reason that I don't want it; you could shut the boot lid thinking it was locked, get in the car and then find someone opening the boot to steal whatever you had just placed there!

Anyway, it's all working as I want now.

Apologies: last sentence of my previous post should read..
