Akebono Ceramic Brake Pads

Featured Replies

I'm a new old Yeti owner and my Yeti is due for brake service. I'm also a new U.S. expat in Taiwan, which makes extremely difficult anything other than paying through the nose and going to the dealer and just trusting them—har!—or letting the inde mechanic just do whatever because of the language barrier. Well, that's not typically the way I handle auto repair—hence my familiarity with this and other auto forums. I know this is a Britain-centric forum, but it's the top hit on most of my searches, so...

I have previously used Akebono ceramic brake pads on my Land Rover Discovery II, a recommended aftermarket option to enhance the feeble OE braking and also keep the wheels dust-free. I was very happy with the results and hope to fit Akebono pads to my Yeti. Akebono is a U.S. brand and doesn't have many European makes in their catalog. After quite a bit of cross-referencing, I think I've found the matching front and rear pads. I wanted to post my results/plans here in case any of you with extreme familiarity with the varying brake fitments for these vehicles could spot any obvious errors before I buy these pads and have them shipped halfway around the world. (Also, if any of you would happen to know a quality ceramic pad I could source locally, I'd be willing to look at that also. I've seen EBC Yellowstuff pads on Yahoo! Auctions here, but they look fake—hmmm.)

See below. Any red flags? And CHEERS in advance!

Front brake pads (code 1ZF, 280x22 mm disc—I think, jump in if this doesn't sound right for my model/year):

Always thought my standard brakes are great. Car has stoped safely once or twice when I would never have stopped in previous cars.

I agree, the Yeti's braking power for this model is exceptional.

I'm looking at ceramics in this instance more for their tidiness. My daily drive is urban stop-and-go and Taiwanese drivers are maniacs. I'm braking hard constantly, and generating tons of brake dust. Then, in this tropical climate, the brake dust from metallic pads goes to rust near instantly. My wheels look like rolling turds after about 2-3 days, and I simply can't be washing them so frequently. In fact, living in a high-rise, I can't wash them myself at all, so further, I can't afford the inconvenience and expense of keeping my car appealing (to me) to look at. Ceramics would be a great solution for the dust issue, in my opinion and experience (ugly brake dust disappeared completely on my Rover after installing the Akebonos).
