2 or 3??

Featured Replies

I have been driving Superb 1s (2, both 2.5V6 TDI Elegance Tip) for over 10 years now and have been more than satisfied with value / quality of motoring. However with the rest of the family driving new motors and being age 72 I have an urge to upgrade (while I still can!!) Looking around, my budget will go to a late 2.0 S2 or maybe an early S3.

I would appreciate others' thoughts on the merits of S2 v S3 and also comments on Tip v DSG. Is the S3 really much bigger overall than the S2?

Or I could drive my S1 into the ground (still only 78k) and transfer direct to a mobility scooter...................

Better the devil you know that is paid for and costing you what you know it costs rather splashing out on New, Dealer Servicing etc etc.

The big changes in vehicles are coming in the next 2 years then there is time enough to change if something takes your fancy.  JMO.

Don't worry about your age - my father has had 3 new Volvos in the last 5 years ( 2 x S80s and an S90 earlier this year).  He is 88.

If you are looking to change, then I'd try and go for the S3 if possible.  Nothing at all wrong with the S2 - I've had two myself - but the S3 is just that bit ahead in terms of comfort and refinement.  In terms of size, the S3 is marginally bigger on paper (width and length) however, in reality it looks a neater design and feels much more agile on the road compared to the S2.  The S3 is even bigger in the rear compared to the older model which is hard to believe given the sheer size of the rear passenger space in the S2.  If you can afford it and it doesn't put you under pressure then go for it...!

I agree with @Superb170 if you would like to change go for the S3. I am 76 now, having had an S2 for seven years, I sold it last year and bought a S3 L&K 190 DSG diesel. The S3 is a bit bigger, but its a much more mature car and a much nicer design. IMHO its much nicer to drive than my S2. Though having said that I was very happy with and enjoyed driving my S2 CR 170 Elegance DSG.

the S3 is different in many many ways to the S2.

Tech.......chassis......engines.......trim.......bigger (exterior, interior & boot)........

I've been an S3 (2.0 TDi) owner for 3 months and 6,000 miles, and before that I had an S2 (also 2.0 TDi) for 4 1/2 years, and covered 100,000 miles pretty much trouble free. Both excellent cars in their own rights. Broadly I'd agree with other responses about design and driving manners. I'm comparing an 2016 SEL-exec 4x44 with a more basic 2012 "S", so not an exact comparison, but I'd say the S3 is a much sharper "driver's" car, with excellent agility and confidence-inspiring handling, compared with the S2. Both are extremely spacious and comfortable, and feel like quality products.

I guess a nicely spec'd S3 would be the "no compromise" option, but late-model S2s are very keenly priced and you could get a low mileage, high spec car for not too many pound Stirling - I toyed with a 2015 S2 but ended up going bananas and getting the new kid on the block!

Some gratuitous pictures of my current and previous Skodas :)

Well, I've been and gone and dunnit........... collected my '66' Superb 3 from Motorpoint Peterborough last week. I thought I was happy with my S 1, but the S 3 is a totally different motoring experience :) - Lighter, much sharper and the £30/yr RFL and 60.1mpg indicated on the journey home was a revelation. Still struggling with instruction manual - think I will have to book a Skoda course at Prague University................. Carefully read instructions on Adblue only to find that mine doesn't use it when looking for the filler.......... Still don't know what other goodies I have yet to find!

Downsides? - have to be very careful with DSG surge when parking in tight spaces, and interior plastics seem a bit 'cheap' compared with S1

Dealing with Motorpoint was also a revelation - from  driving in to driving out with telephone offer for S1 confirmed with no queries / deal complete/ tax/insurance/cherished plate transfer and me driving out in less than 2 hours. Wouldn't have happened in my days in the trade (new Hillman Imp £536, £548 with heater..............)

Congratulations :)

Well done and congrats on the new Superb!  I think you've made the right decision there :)
