Cracked windscreen

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I have just bought a 66 plate Octavia vrs tdi estate, two weeks ago. Last week I noticed there is a crack in the windscreen coming from the base of the window at the drivers side and heading further out towards the A pillar. On initial inspection the service manager thought it would be covered by the warranty but now the Warranty manager wants some other check done....has anyone else had any issues with their windscreens?

There are no chips in it by the way.

Is it the factory fitted screen in the car?

It would be great to know what further checks can be done.

Sounds like a 'Service  Manager' that did not want to say 'sorry that will not be covered under the manufacturers warranty' to your face,

and is putting off so that you will be told over the phone or by letter.

Was that the Service Manager from the Service Desk rather than the Dealership Warranty Manager, or Workshop Manager. or Master Tech.

?

Which Dealership group are we talking about here?

Glassy, yes it's the original heated screen that's in.

Awayoffski, it was the service manager I believe. Apparently the warranty manager has asked for the extra check. The dealer is West end Skoda in Stirling, to be fair to them they are coming to me as I'm 20 odd miles away.

Hi WaHoo, if there is no chip visible in the glass, it sounds rather like it may be a stress fracture - possibly caused by body flexing putting pressure on a "hard point" formed during improper installation of the screen at the factory - unless there is something in the cars history showing that the screen has been replaced since manufacture. In either case should be covered by a warranty one way or the other.

Replacement screen may possibly what the dealer wants to check for.

Good luck in getting it resolved to your satisfaction.

How many miles has the car done?

Covered just over 7000 miles so far.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Very unlikely to be a stress crack.

Run something along the crack, like a scriber of some sort (or [metal] ball point pen). If there's an impact you'll feel it. There are other causes for breaks but stress fracture is unlikely given the age/mileage.

An update, the dealer came to me to check the windscreen, good service, and has decided to go ahead and replace the screen under warranty. Result.........!!!!!

Great news!

Great news, I very much suspect an installation fault. I bet those heated screens aren't cheap.

What makes you think that?

It can't be great news if he's been forced to add a claim to his insurance profile; besides, if it's what you suspect, "an installation fault", how can it be great news?

"Great news" because WaHoo  posted that the dealer was replacing his screen under warranty. This would obviously tend to suggest that said dealer was unable to find any sign of impact damage on inspection. If the crack was not caused by an impact, reasonable to assume installation fault. There can be a fair amount of stress imparted into the windscreen glass of modern vehicles.

I should read the post(s) properly - got this one confused with a similar thread; apologies.

FTR, stress cracks are a bit of a myth in windscreens. If, in the rare instance, there is an 'unexplained' fracture, it usually is (as you have suggested) down to installation (or installer) error.

Having had 2 replacement heated screens, both caused by Lincolnshire council's road dressing policy, i.e. Chuck down a ton of stones and leave for 2 weeks, the only pessimistic note is that I felt that there were a few more creaks in the dashboard during the winter than previously. The MkIII has a well-known fault of B pillar rattle on poorly surfaced roads, therefore in Lincolnshire, you tend to notice it. Yet another source of creaks and rattles is unwelcome on what is supposed to be an update to the more-solid MkII.

So the car is booked to go in on Wednesday for its replacement screen.....just need to replace a 19" Pirelli P Zero now as I have a bloody great screw lodged in the NSR tyre, hope this isn't how ownership of this awesome car is going to continue!

mine is having a new screen fitted on Wednesday too by Autoglass, they have informed me it will be an after-market screen which I'm not too happy about, should I be concerned or are they acceptable?

The one I had was fine. It'll be made to the same spec, just won't have a Skoda logo on it. Probably made in the same factory.

just had it fitted, it's a Pilkington glass screen so should be OK-ish I think.. main thing bothering me is the gap along the top is 2mm wider on drivers side which is quite noticeable.. you can see the random bonding material down the A pillars too but the guy said that's how they are factory!!

Random bonding material? You mean, like ooze?

Hi Marko, it went away into the dealer today for a new screen, they tell me that once fitted it will stand for 24 hours to allow full bonding and then it will need taken to Edinburgh to have the lane assist camera recalibrated......once I get it back I will update on how it looks.
