Waze

Featured Replies

So I'm using waze which is awesome with one minor gripe. Has anyone managed to get the road speed and warning up as even though I have set in the options to display and it appears on my phone it doesn't show on the Amundsen?

Just started using Waze on Android Auto and the speed display is currently missing and acknowledged by Waze. Its due to appear in a beta soon. Many features that you get when using Waze on your phone do not migrate to the car display, supposedly to keep the display as clear as possible.

I plan to report my findings soon. So far it appears to be better than Maps since it shows live traffic and speed cameras but Maps never let me down.

Watch this space.

i drove my wife's car  - which has Android Auto capability, mine doesn't - last week and Waze was not available to use.

Did you do something special to make it come up ?

The speed display is really the only thing which differentiates it from Maps (it seems to me)  so if that's not available i might not need to change anyway

I first saw it being available last week and noticed that it showed some speed cameras - which Maps doesn't.

that is philosophy of AndroidAuto not Waze, all adopted apps are limited in they functionality(for safety reasons) -

keep use Waze directly on the phone

@Wet Kipper

You may need to download the latest version from the play store as the older version was not AA compatible

John

Back now and some more info.

I joined the Waze Beta program back in May but I did not actually get it working  until earlier this month,

You need the latest Waze Beta for Android Auto and not the ordinary Waze that works on your phone. I have 4.27.0.1 installed on my phone and I believe this is the current version. I downloaded it from https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/waze/waze-gps-maps-traffic-alerts-live-navigation/waze-gps-maps-traffic-alerts-live-navigation-4-27-0-1-release/ It installed with no issues and there have been no crashes so far. I could not find the required version on Play Store or in the Play Store Beta Channel despite Waze saying they were in one or the other.

Once you have Android Auto open on the car screen when you hit the nav button at the bottom left you should get an arrow in the button, hit it again and you should get a choice of Maps or Waze. I had to hit Waze a couple of times before it actually started, it seemed to want to load Maps as usual.

My experience with Maps was fine. It always got us to the destination but I missed the speed camera info, speed limit info and speedometer we got on the old Garmin. But at least the maps were up to date. We used it on a 1000 mile round trip in May and did not spot a single map issue.

On Waze it shows and verbally alerts you to cameras plus it shows live info about traffic hold ups on your route. So far both appear current. At this time there is still no speed limit or speedo but in an e-mail from the Waze Beta Program on 11/07/17 they stated "Following your feedback we’ll add the Speedometer in a future version" so its just a matter of waiting.

Used it again today and it got us there and back fine with one exception. At a junction about 5 miles from home I ignored its instruction to carry strait on and went the normal and much shorter route to the left. At the 2nd junction on my route the road ahead was closed so I decided it was best to follow Waze this time. Added about 4 miles and a good 10 minutes to the trip by thinking I knew best.

So far its a good experience and hopefully when the extra features are available it will suit us perfectly.

4-27-0-1 is the current release on the play store was released end of last month, that is where I got mine from and it works with AA, but as mentioned does not have the speed displayed

And as I mentioned it is to be included in a future version.

Wonder if this will ever been on CarPlay.

I doubt it very much. Sadly I suspect Carplay will remain an Apple maps exclusive zone for the foreseeable future.

Hope I'm wrong.

Another update.

The other day the phone informed me that there was a Waze update version 4.28.0.1. Research found nothing on the official Waze Beta site so ignored update, did not want to loose the option to use it in the car. Well I charged the phone a day or so later and whilst on charge it updated it just for fun. This left me concerned that it may not work in AA.

Been out in the car today and all is OK, it still works. Still no speedo or speed limit display but everything else is fine. Speed cameras displayed with audible warning, traffic light camera shown (but no audible warning since I did not pass through it) and road works were also displayed.

Just done another Google and one site suggested that Waze for AA was out of Beta and into mainstream.

Then I found the official Waze blog https://blog.waze.com/2017/07/Waze-for-Android-Auto.html which states that Waze fro AA went official on 26 July.

So all we need now is for the speedo and speed limits that are on the phone screen to transfer to the in car display.

Waze was bought by Google last year (I think) but all the blurb at the time made it clear its philosophy would remain the same i.e. a community supported project. It was at the time of purchase they said that it would join Maps and be available on Android Auto.

Cannot see it getting support to become Apple compatible.

I gave Waze a try yesterday.  I switched Android Auto to use it instead of Maps.  After this, voice commands won't work.  It replies with "I don't know how to...." blah.  Switched it back to normal Maps.

Also, I like the principle behind Waze but it would be great if they could drop the "Fisher Price, My First Sat Nav" style look and feel?

Did another 1000 mile round trip last week and Waze on AA worked perfectly.

It updated yesterday to version 4.30.0.1 and the speedo and speed limits are now working on Android Auto. I had to go into settings to change them to mph and get the speed limit displaying all the time but on a 15 mile each way trip it worked perfectly via AA and all the limits displayed were up to date (unlike my Garmin or the built in Nav in the wifes 2 year old Nissan).

where did you change the settings - in the app (on phone), or when running on car screen

Also, has anyone found a way - for either Waze or Google Maps on AndAuto - of stopping it going almost completely black (night time mode) when you turn the headlights on. I suspected it might be a function within the actual car unit - i know how to do it in my Octy's Amunsden+ "Nav" settings - but I couldn't see an option in the Fabia because it doesn't have "nav" to have any settings.

Waze on the phone in the house. Worked fine when connected to the car via cable.

You can control AA day/night mode in the Developer menu.

Open AA on your phone, go to the About page, and tap the title bar lots of times until you get a message about developer options.  Then tap the three dots in the top right of the screen and go to developer options.
