Problem with Xenon auto adjustment

Featured Replies

I have an Octavia 2006 with Xenon lights. There is something wrong with the auto height adjustment of the lights. Every second or third time I start the car the left hand Xenon adjust clearly too high. The right hand side always stays at the same level, which I assume is the correct one. Sometimes the left side adjust correctly to the same level as the right side at startup, but after returning back after a drive it is again high, it seems to loose adjustment also during driving. I park my car heading a wall, that's why i have noticed this phenomena.

Anyone had similar problems? Any idea where to start the troubleshooting?

Perhaps an issue with the level sensor? I had to have one replaced on my 2010 vRS after an intermittent fault. However if the system detects a fault it should (on FL cars at least) default the light into a lowered position to ensure it doesn't dazzle oncoming drivers.

Given it's only one headlight, I expect it could be an issue with the motor or linkage to move the projector in that headlight.

I'd suggest taking a look inside to see if anything obvious is broken/hanging/moving :)

I think both of them would behave similarly if the sensor would be bad.

Might be worth removing the headlight assembly, open the back and check if the wires don't put pressure on the mechanism somehow. Then again, it might only happen when the headlight is sealed but try to make sense of this first.

Did you ever manually adjust the aim?

If the sensor is bad, i suppose it should give an error in the ODB-II, but there are no errors at all. The strange thing is that the left light levels out normally every second time and high every second or third. I have not tried to adjust the headlights manually, but I bought the car two months ago, no idea what my predecessor have done.

Where is the motor situated, it is probably inside the bulk headlight assembly which detatches from the car entirely? and where is the sensor situated?

I suppose the next step is top open up everything and try to identify something wrong. Sometimes a light treatment also helps :)

Do you know any good youtube videos for instructions?

If you have VCDS, Ross-Tech has a good guide in the official site.

To manually adjust the positioning I assume VCDS is needed so that to pass the appropriate commands in the controller.

This is a pretty good video showing the removal of the assembly. Try having a look inside see if there's anything odd.
