MY 2018 Auxiliary heating/ventilation with APP

Hi!

 

Does anyone have a MY18 with factory installed auxiliary heating ? I remember reading that it now should be controllable by APP, if the car is connected to Internet.

 

If someone has it, it would be interesting to know if it works well.

 

Looking forward to heating the car in advance during winter, and ventilating it in advance during summer :)

I have a MY18 with factory installed heater. Even thogh It is still warm outside i tried to activate the heater with the app today. I had to generate a pin on the ŠkodaConnect web site to get started.

 

You need a SIM card in the car or have the car connected to a wifi to remote control it.

I will have a SIM card in the car, that won't be a problem. Good to know that it works.

 

I'm imagining being in an airport lounge waiting for my flight home, and setting the car to be warm for me when I arrive ;)

UK cars don't come with the auxillary heater. Also, did your dealer not set up SkodaConnect as part of the handover? They should do...

Sorry to contradict - it really depends on what you mean by "auxilliary heater".

 

If you're talking about the Webasto type used extensively in Scandanavian countries, which uses the car's engine and fuel system to heat the car interior, these are not fitted in UK spec cars since it would involve the car idling in the driveway/roadside etc. Under existing UK law/regulations, this is illegal. Airport parking warmth - forget it.

 

My 2018 Skoda Kodiaq diesel does indeed have an auxilliary - electric powered - heater (think 2 bar electric fire) installed as standard (I checked this with the official Skoda manufacturer's spec sheets for my VIN). These are only needed in diesel cars since their engines do not produce sufficient heat to warm the cockit. Very effective they are too - especially with full leather seating. Petrol engined cars don't need them.

I guess i have one too then as i have a diesel

. soooo pray tell how can you use it remotely? Or is this not possible?

I'll go with the definition of "auxiliary heater" given in the manual:

 

The auxiliary heating heats the vehicle interior as well as the engine. For heating, fuel is consumed from the fuel tank.

 

The type that is on the diesel engines isn't something that can be scheduled to turn on at certain times, or operated remotely - it's just (as you said) to perform the heating function that the heat generated by a petrol engine does anyway. It's the same reason why DPFs on diesels need to do regens, but the ones fitted to new petrol engines - like the new 1.5TSi on the Karoq and coming soon to the Kodiaq - don't need to because the heat from the engine essentially means they are constantly able to burn off the excess soot (or whatever it is the regen does).

No they didnt set up connect.. Been playing with it. Only shows engine size and transmission type and trip planner

My Skoda connect was set up during handover and is fully functional, showing vehicle data, last trip details etc, doors locked or lights on, fuel range, service due, parking position,vehicle health, trip planer, and honk and flash.

Did the dealer register your Skoda connect and give you the access code?

No i registered it myself

Skoda has two types of extra heaters.

One is called "auxiliary heater" or Webasto slang - wise. This one can be programmed and is available as option.

Another one is called "additional heater" and is standard on diesel versions in Nordic countries. This is basically electrically powered ceramic elements on vents.

 

Both have pros and cons. 

Webasto allows pre - heating of saloon and engine whereas ceramic heater starts to blow hot air way quicker when starting with cold engine.

whilst waiting for my new purchase Karoq to arrive I was reading lots of online articles etc and though this would be a great feature especially during this time of year.   Now find out its not a feature on UK spec cars.   Its only a feature on European Spec cars.  Challenged UK Skoda as UK is part of Europe even if we may not be part of EU for much longer.  My model Karoq has heated front windscreen, heated seats, snow mode as 4x4 and UK is potentially colder than other parts of Europe including Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Germany, etc etc etc.   No answer why?

Us Irish too.  I wonder if post Brexit we will get the heating as well as the extra USB's they have.....I doubt it somehow.

I wonder if it has something to do with running the car without a driver being against the law, similarly like not having DVD player running past 5 mph?

Skoda UK are simply an importer of Skoda Auto's vehicles. They are free to choose (within reason) the models and specification variants that Skoda Auto (the factory) offer.

 

This means that Skoda UK get to choose what features are on the cars sold here in the UK.

 

We all know how poor Skoda UK are reacting to customer feedback, and the mistakes they've made when finalising the available standard specs and possible factory options on their cars previously.

 

If a product manager in Milton Keynes doesn't feel that adding the auxiliary heater will yield more sales / margin, or more likely that they don't properly understand their customer base, then it'll never appear on the options list.

 

I would have added it as an option if available. Luckily Volvo offer it, so my next car will probably be from them.

Webasto style auxiliary heaters are perfectly legal in the UK - they don't require running the engine although they take quite a lot of power from the battery. VW offer them as an option in the UK on some cars like the Caravelle. My guess is that the UK Kodiaq doesn't offer it because of some issue with re-engineering it for RHD and finding somewhere for the components to fit in. Or simply because so few people are likely to specify it that it's simply not worth the bother.

Definitely this. Our climate is such that it would be genuinely useful for about 1/52 of the year (on average across the country).

 

The vast majority of people don’t even want to pay extra for a heated steering wheel, and that is an option on quite a few cars these days!

Couldn’t agree more. On my old Alhambra the webasto was standard fit and it was excellent, as it kicked in at temps from 4 degrees and below. 

My new Kodiaq has a heated steering wheel, which I didn’t ask for, but it was a vehicle available with a pan roof. Would I order one especially, no. Is it ok as I have it for free, yes.

They only annoying thing with the steering wheel heater is it automatically comes on when you put the heated seat on, and have to manually turn it off

You can configure whether the steering wheel is linked to heat up automatically with the seats via the climate control menu. Heated steering wheel is one of my favourite options on the Kodiaq, and good enough that my wife picked it as an option for her new car (not many things impress her about cars)
