09 vRS TDI - twangy/notchy steering in warm to hot weather

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Done a little search and can't seem to find same symptom listed here, problem only occurs in warm to hot weather.

I've noticed over the last couple summers, the steering seems to twang when turning the wheel.

I wouldn't describe it as notchy, but there is a slight feel and twanging noise to it.

Clearly noticeable when low speed manoeuvring, not when driving at normal speeds.

Hasn't bothered me all winter, and last couple days its been around 27C and its displaying this symptom again.

I wasn't overly worried about it previously as I though I would have moved into a MkIII by now, but we're turning our other car over instead, so this one must push on for another 3 years.

30C+ and 40C+ exhibits the problem all the time.   Steering is not any heavier, it just doesn't feel or sound quite right.

Anything anyone can suggest any checks I can make, and any preventatives to ensure it doesn't get any worse.

thanks

Have you checked for broken front springs and top mounts?

Yes, as per @pikpilot, I'd suspect springs or top mounts. I have a 2011, in wet weather a few months back, I had so much of a twang after a hard turn in a car park,  I had to stop the car and get out and have a look underneath. Next day I jacked car up and removed front wheels but couldn't find anything.  Sometimes an occasional catching or stiff top mount is not that common on the setup and can be an exceptional occurrence. Mine hasn't reoccurred again, ..... yet.

Good point to check top mount.

wouldnt expect it’s spring, it’s not that loud.

but still struggling to work out why it only occurs in warm weather.

will monitor it further as our weather warms up, 28C forecast for next Wednesday.

thanks

Mine was similar; big bang when going round a mini roundabout but nothing obvious when I checked. Only happened once.

At the MOT they found a break in one of the front springs.
