Central Locking for non electric car.

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

my son has the standard 1.2 petrol Fabia 2004 with no electrics, no central locking, no steering wheel buttons....nothing. Everything is manual.

I wondered if it was possible to fit a central locking system to this car. There are some cheap kits on Ebay. Not worried about an alarm and the other trimmings, only the C/L.

If anyone has experience in this I would appreciate your valued advise.

Thanks in advance.

I've had a long ongoing project of fitting central locking to my o4 TDI. Maplin central locking kit. If you are into/understand electronics, then I've designed a remote system built around a rolling security Keeyloq  system , which needs a Quasar remote system . This will lock/unlock doors and separately the rear hatch. I've even got the PCB layout . Anyone interested- PM. But you will need basic skills in PCB production and circuit production . OH- and a light box, another one of my projects. But weight this in against Skoda cost of key central locking at circa £200 , and the lightbox costs approx £50 -60 , the Maplin central locking kit £20 circa , the remote 3/4 channel circa £40 and the PSU AROUND £10 . I've got  a (yet to be tested circuit to flash hazards) on lock design . All free for evaluation , hoping that Colin might get a few £ or pints into the forum kitty.

Thanks for your comments, however I know nothing about electrics and am useless at anything like this. I have seen kits like this on Ebay for £21

Just need to know if this can be fitted to my Son's Fabia which has no electrics and how practical it would be.

Why is it necessary? If you know nothing and can't do the work you'll have to pay someone else to do it, in which case they'll want to use a kit they're familiar with and comfortable fitting.

I seriously wouldn't bother if I were you, I seem to remember coping ok before mainstream CL came along in the 80's, it's never been on my list of desirable features when purchasing a car.

ha33- with lack of electrical knowledge- I'd give it a miss. I've had a Classic model for 10 years and apart from the need to open hatch remotely I've never had problems. My solution is one for blokes with electronics production skills and basic electrics.

It's for my son, it's a lot cheaper to fit to his car (if possible) rather than get another car!

I just enquired whether anyone knows if it can be done to this car or not, as some say it Cannot be done, where others say it can be... confused,

Anyone shed some light please?

Dude, anything is possible given the right facilities and abilities, I'm questioning whether what you want to attempt is necessary or even desirable, I recently spent the entire day changing out a rear door lock which had failed and would no longer open just so I could pass the MOT because I have central locking which I don't need. No-one breaks into ancient cars with no valuables in them, why would they bother?

It's very easy to get into a big mess on a project like this if you're starting from scratch, you'll be dismantling all the doors to fit parts and run wires and you need somewhere well-lit, spacious and dry where the car can be in pieces for days, access to a good range of tools and extensive hand skills and electrical know-how.

If you've got all that then go for it, but we won't be able to help if it all goes tits-up, you'll need a good mobile auto electrician and hundreds of pounds.

Remembered reading this when it was first put up. Some of the pictures are missing but you may want to read the topic and then decide if you still want to go ahead.

Fabia central locking retrofit Part Deux

I think the best option realistically is to change the car for one fitted with them from factory if it means that much to have it.

The comfort models have the central locking, heated electric mirrors and electric windows, trip computer etc which are nice to have also.

It probably wouldnt cost any more to change the car than to retrofit the central locking even yourself the time involved wouldn't really be worth it.

I agree, and you can then pick a more suitable colour if this one annoys him, very easy to do, nice!
