Not a bad effort, eh? :D

When I break something I usually like to make it an all or nothing affair.

Got myself a decent spare driveshaft now which will be fitted tomorrow. Thanks to Devonmikeyboy for this, even if we did drive 10 miles unnecessarily to get it in the end. ;)

FUCT or Failed Under Continuous Testing.

Nice one. Have you considered a switch on the gear selecor to trigger limiting torque in 1st?

Chris

We've got a couple of trucks in work that limit revs in first gear, and a right royal pain in the 4rse they are too in practice.

How would you be able to limit torque in 1st - wouldnt that require something to be done in the ECU, plus how would you wire it in?

Apart from the above mechanical issue, which should be rare enough occurrence, you have to ask "why?" as well. ;)

Nice.

Has any of the custom remap company's been able to limit the torque in the first couple of gears?

Very true - I'm more worried about the DMF at the moment, trying to find a way of uprating it at the moment (separate thread)

Give the car less welly off the line ;)

Chris

I kinda gathered that ;) - just wondered if technically it could be done with the standard ECU, personally I just use the miracle of controlling my feet in such a way that it doesn't happen :D

But when you're on the start line in front of a small crowd and a ch4v alongside you in some pocket rocket Nissan Almera GTI, it all goes to pot.

You know I mentioned you can exchange your old CV joint.............. I dont think that applies to yours ;)

Hmm yeah I reckon you'd have a job explaining how that happened with 'normal use' only :D :D :D

Damaged in the post? Actually, could that be a good way of recovering some of the cash ;)

Chris

I think he needs to save all the cash he can TBH - the gear box will be a little more expensive.

tut tut! Such pessimism. :P :P

I always have an optimistic outlook - Always think if I talk about something bad happening, me thinking about it too much will make it happen. :D

and did you get my part from him while you were there?????

Why is simple enough, to preserve the drivetrain in the lowest gear. Think about it, 1st is, with the final drive ratio, 12:1, so 360lb/ft at the flywheel is 4320lbft at the driveshaft. As it was only designed to take 2750 lb/ft or so, it would seem like a good idea.

Also, we all know traction in the standard car is not up to much in 1st, so a torque limit would be ideal, making getting it off the line much easier. Have experience running it to limit the nitrous to around +250 lb/ft in 1st (triggered off the autobox selector valve solenoids), then let it have the other 2/3rds when 2nd selected with the tiniest of delays to let the box finish its change.

Chris

Ok - that makes sense :) thanks for that Chris.

Tricky on a non-auto-box I'd imagine though to achieve it. You'd pretty much end up with something that was linked into the drive-by-wire to pretend you're not flooring the accelerator I suppose, that way it wouldnt impact the ECU.

The autobox you're referring to, would that be the DSG one? I'm guessing that if it is & it's showing the gear on a display it should be possible to do some magic in the ECU :)
