2015 octavia vrs infotainment carplay and columbus

Featured Replies

hi anyone able to explain or suggestions about my infotainment system

i have a 2015 octavia vrs my infotainment doesn't have navigation nor does it have car play.

ive spoke to the local stealer about coding and what unit i would need he said a 2016 Columbus unit. then to code it would be £100 i asked if the carplay would work automatically he wasn't sure but said be £150 to code mirror link.

any advice tech guys?

thanks in advance and if anybody in midlands or a lil further out able to code it a lot cheaper please get in touch

thanks

I have a 2014 vRS without Nav or CarPlay (don't miss Nav at all, really miss CarPlay), and that eBay unit is not a MKIII headunit

I did some research when I got my MKIII to see if I could retrofit a CarPlay compatible infotainment system, and with MKIII I believe it's very difficult to replace it with a newer model. I came to the conclusion that if I really wanted CarPlay it would be easier, and probably cheaper, to sell my 2014 car and buy a car with the CarPlay compatible system (but happy to be proved wrong).

Edit to add;

I believe that the component protection on the MKIII means that all changes like this need to be coded by Skoda, you can't just swap out the units and expect them to work. Again, a shame as I'd happy spend some money to get the newer infotainment system.

I have the Nav unit, if I didn't I wouldn't waste the money trying to upgrade. The sat nav is very poor, stick to google maps on your phone!

There are a couple of systems that add Sat Nav functionality to the the MIB1, and Skoda do sell and install them. No idea how it compares to standard Nav, it adds just the Sat Nav functionality.

is it a new unit or just software upgrade

Looks good, does it have Android Auto?

The page linked to is a little misleading, it's not the Apple CarPlay/Android Auto replacement head unit at the top of the page, it's the GVN-MIB1 below, and I believe it's a 'box' installed in the dash that uses the existing infotainment as the display for the add=on Sat Nav, so no CarPlay or Android Auto

I had the Pioneer AppRadio 4 (The sph-da120 rds) installed in my Octavia II replacing the pretty basic Skoda Stream unit.

Even on my 2006 Octavia I lost some functions like the park distance display when reversing (but it still beeped) and the temperature setting display (duplicated on the climate controls), but it was an excellent upgrade over the standard unit as I got Sat Nav (using Apple Maps), streaming media, and Bluetooth phone functionality for less than £400 (£340 plus some parts).

There were some issues, it did reboot every now and again, and the lack of any physical controls was a pain (I didn't have the multi-function steering wheel, but I don't know if it would have worked), and when you turned the engine off the stereo switched off as well (The standard Steam head unit used CANBUS so it stayed on until you removed the key from the ignition) and it clearly didn't look stock.

I certainly wouldn't spend £1000 on an aftermarket unit, but the MIB1 fitted to my 2014 Octavia III is integrated into so many of the car's functions there's no way I'd replace it with an aftermarket unit . As I suggested above, if I really needed CarPlay/Android Auto, I'll sell my current car and use the £1000 to help fund a newer car with the MIB2 head unit.

well i talked to a guy (tim or tom cant remember) he said it would be fine may just need to change the usb connector (£36 from stealer) £1100 for the mib2 parts he fitted it for £70 and everything is working fine so now have sat nav and carplay all for a bi pricey £1206. so it can be done if you dont mind spending the money. obviously can be done cheaper if you can get units cheaper and fit yourself and get the usb connector cheaper. if unsure if you need the usb connector just open up the plate housing the usb and aux if its part no is 5Q0 035 726 B then you will need to change it. they are very different length wise new one is twice as long part no 5Q0 035 726 E.
