Haldex 5 service interval

Recommended Posts

This other video also properly explain the way to do it (here on a VW Tiguan Mk I).

The thing I like is the monitoring of the Haldex clutch pump current and Haldex clutch pump PWM signal. The before / after clearly shows the effect of the cleaning  and(the filter gauze cleaning especially).

The best ever Haldex service video, had I known of that then I would not have destroyed my differential by making a stupid mistake that many others including garages have also done. It has also given me some closure because the video being taken on a ramp I can see clearly now what I have been trying to replay in my mind from when my car was jacked up.

First my excuses, I was recovering from a major eye operation and was blind in my left eye, my right eye is very long sighted, I was wearing close vision glasses but with the limited access was too cloes to the job given my reduced field of vision.

I was walking back to my computer looking at the still photos of a Haldex service, I correctly identified the filler plug shown at 12 O clock on the first 3 minutes of the video and it said and showed the Haldex drain plug as underneath it, look at the video here and you will see a plain bolt underneath with a drain plug slightly to the right, they are both on the same casting and I mistakenly drained that one 😞

With the better view on the video I can plainly see now that its directly under the crown wheel centre line so must be the diff drain plug but the oil that came out was thin Haldex oil although clean, not transmission oil so mistakes had been made before me and maybe the diff was already partially worn, but I certainly finished the job by driving it dry.

The correct drain plug doesnt even look like a drain plug, when I finally identified it and drained & refilled again mine had the same head as the other casing retaining bolts and as you can see is a long bolt like all the others, nothing like a drain plug.

Anyway enough of my excuses for my stupidity, watching this video will prevent anyone else making the same mistake, it also shows some of the other problems I had and explains them.

Access and visibility is zero to detach the electrical plug and remove the cable clips, I had to do everything by feel which as a half blind man is a skill I am developing, I could feel the connector, knew what to do with it but could only get one finger to it at a time and maybe the side of the thumb whilst getting lots of cuts, it took a long long time but I succeeded, the pump would not come out because as he said the cable was really tight and I could not even get my fingertips up behind to touch the fixings, I knew there were two from moving both ends but thought they might be metal P clips under bolt heads. Now seeing the video I would know to feel up on the other side of the flange, what to feel for and how to pinch and push the clips.

But for me it was impossible and I had to really strain the cable to eventually get the nose of the pump to extract, I then cleaned the filter in situ with the pump hanging.

If I had a vehicle ramp instead of trolley jack and stands and also good lighting like he had I'm sure I would not have made the mistake and would also have removed the connector easier and found and released the cable clips.

I plan to move house soon and a large garage with headroom for a vehicle lift is a number one priority as I want to continue working on my vehicles.

That video should be a sticky if the mods agree and can do so, cheaper than having to replace a differential which is expensive enough but will also involve me buying another house with garage and a vehicle lift!

Is the fill plug hard to undo? I tried this afternoon and mine is stuck solid. Looks like it may have been glued with threadlocker?

I've just bought a 5mm hex to 3/8 for my torque wrench so hopefully that will make it easier to undo!

Done! Photos from last night of the pump and filter. The filter was quite sludgy after 40,000 miles so well in need of a clean! I also took the opportunity to change the O rings on the pump.

I filled up with oil until oil flowed out of the inlet, put the bolt back in then ran the pump program on VCDS... Where the pump wirred away and the test timed out...

Filled up with more oil (twice) and put the bolt back in and pump priming successfully complete.

Overall quite a simple job, but would be easier with the right tools and a hoist!

Hi guys!

Just did my first haldex gen 5 service . The pump was changed 27000 km ago. And as you can see in the picture , the little filter is full of ****. So glad that i cleaned it, in with the new oil, pump the motor with vcds and fill it again. I managed to fill about 700 ml . The oil that came out was about 550 ml. I guess they didnt bother to fill again after priming the pump

Yes, complete nonsense, that the workshop manual doesn't include any step to clean the pump strainer during the Haldex Oil change operation...

All the more strange that Haldex Gen 4 had an external oil filter to be replaced upon each Haldex oil change. 🤔

Except that it's not on any VAG service schedule to change the paper cartridge filter on Haldex 4 or clean the gauze strainer on Haldex 5.

Inspired by a recent pic I'd seen of a Haldex 5 strainer that appeared to be badly clogged after 20k miles, I recently had the my local VAG Independent service the Haldex on my wife's Karoq 190 TDI.

Since it gets driven fairly hard at least some of the time, I was pleasantly surprised at how clean it was.

First pic is the really dirty one that I referred to initially.  The second and third are before and after pics of ours.  All at 20k miles.

Bickertons wouldn't do it when I asked them as it's not on the Skoda to-do list.

I'm booked in for a service/MOT next month with an indie and they're happy to do it (for a fee, naturally).

I've used them on and off for the last three cars (Octavia, Mk II, Mk III) after the warranty expired.

I've stuck a note in my calendar for the day of the service to ask for a photo. It's the end of Feb so will be a few weeks.

Haldex after two oil changes and just under 30k miles. 12k of that was towing a caravan.

First oil change was done by dealer who refused to clean filter. Second by local indie this morning.

Looks like it was worthwhile!

Having had an 2007 Octy 4x4 until last year I always got it done properly by a couple of local specialists so would be interested in knowing who you used to see if they are the same - any chance you could confirm who and how much (by PM or on here) as our Kodiaq will be coming up for a service soon and, whilst the Haldex was serviced by the dealer last year before I bought it they have not answered my query as to whether the filter was also cleaned - so I'm assuming not...

How would I know what generation Haldex is in my Skoda Yeti Adventure 2015?

Fault codes 01324, Control module for all wheel drives.. etc is still present. Jacked up the car and removed and opened the control module to see if the circuit board was corroded which is was not. Does anyone believe that the fault code is related to a blocked strainer at the end of the Haldex pump?

Kind regards!

You have not shown the secondary part of the fault code, maybe because of using a generic reader.

Do you have: 004 - No Signal/Communication?

Maybe with VCDS you would see that.

I would speculate that the fault is in either of the wiring plugs to the control module or the pump, the latter seems to get more corroded and you will have already inspected the former.

J.R. you are right. 004- No signal/communication. But hard to know where to start looking. Sensors on each wheel is checked. Is it possible that the sensor itself could be U/S not showing any signs from outside? Also, when I read live data I can see that each sensor giving me input (Km/h) so not very suspicious to them. Any idea?  BTW, I use Foxwell NT680 Pro.

What module have you read these fault codes from? Is it gateway, engine, abs...? Or is it stored in lots of modules.

Honestly though a generic handheld scanner will give the bare minimum data, really need a specific tool for the job

It is read in the 03-ABS Brakes Control system. What specific tool do you have in mind? Cannot afford a professional scanner, payed 600 for the Foxwell..
