Alloy question

Featured Replies

Hi there, I'm running my MPI on its original steels with 185/60 -R14 tyres. I was wondering if these would fit the classic Skoda fabia 5 spoke alloys like those fitted on to the silver line. Or do i have to by new tyres. I only ask as my current tyres are almost new and matching. I'm picking up the alloys on Saturday.

I believe those 14" alloys were fitted standard to elegance models so 185/60 14

and the 15" versions were on the 'sport' and bohemia models 195 50 15

as long as you have bought the 14" wheels then your old tyres will be fine

I think that you meant 185/60 X 14 there?

Sweet. I've got some other jobs the weekend, fitting my AUX socket and adaptor (connects2) and checking for a possible broken wire in the door, temperamental puddle light. So on Sunday I'll be checking them out and cleaning.

Thanks for the info guys.

Check inside the rubber bellows. I had a busted wire in mine.

Here's a pic of the new alloys I picked up from Evesham. Set of four with locking nuts and key for them and the full set of nuts.

Down side is I've had a strange kinda squishy sound from the rear off side. Its come on after I changed the rear brakes and drums. The drum it self seems to have gotten quiet hot as it has that brown hue to it now and it stunk when breaking in the new shoes.  I've checked the shoes, cylinders and associated parts and all is OK. Only thing is the bearing seems not as quiet as it once was and the drum has a herring bone pattern inside on the friction face. I think I may have cooked the bearing a little and the sound is a kinda jerky movement in the bearing when braking. So as euro car parts has a black Friday sale on I've reserved both a bearing / hub and new drum.

Looks like I'm not checking my puddle lights this weekend off. Oh well.

Do yourself a favour and chuck the locking bolts in the bin since you have enough standard bolts to make a complete set, nobody steals bog standard alloy wheels off fifteen year old cars, you'll thank me next time the wheels have to come off after a salty winter.

I find the skoda ones pretty good actually. Not had any issues even when the tyre place torqued them up to 250nm

:whew:

Thats what the torque wrench maxed at when I tested the torque. Could well have been more as it required a 750mm bar and a length of tube attached to it.

Good lord!

My 3.5T LWB van is only 235NM, don't use that place again, they could have killed you, over tightened wheel bolts can snap really easily.

I had it happen to me years ago on my old Passat estate, I was barreling along the dual carriageway and as I went round a sweeping bend the steering wheel started to vibrate like I'd lost a wheel weight, drove it steady the rest of the way to work, parked up and took a look to see two bolt heads missing, jacked it up to find that the remaining two bolts were finger tight and also about to shear off, I almost went white with fear when I thought about what could have happened on that sweeper at 70 MPH if they'd all let go.

It was a tyre place previous to me owning the car. I checked the threads very carefully but they were ok

I recently say a transit van with the wheel halfway down the road and a deep scrape in the tarmac on a slight right hand bend, looked closer as i went past and the wheel studs had all snapped!
