Car for 30k a year

Does it really matter?

KIa European HQ in Germany Hyundai factory in the Czech Republic and not using Defeat Devices as far as anyone knows so far.

Plenty EU Type Approved vehicles have Implausible / Irregular Co2 / MPG from the Emissions testing,

at least Kia / Hyundai should have learned their lesson from North America & Canada. It cost them plenty giving out Fuel Cards when they were caught out.

( Some in the US that watch European reviews on MPG with European version are unaware the US Gallon is not an Imperial Gallon,

but as long as US reviewers are talking US Gallon you get a clear idea, or Mericans should.)

Petrol engine & assistance and Autobox actually go well IMO, and the Auto can be fun when you use the box in a sporting way...

  • I thought that the small hi power petrol engines were actually worse than the diesels for their NOx emissions in the real life testing - I'll try to find the article.

  • I do the exact same mileage as you (62 miles, 124 mile round trip). 1/3 country roads, 1/3 single carriageway A-roads and 1/3 dual carriageway A-roads.   I bought this for £12,000 in 2013 at

You wonder just how far German influence goes with Hyundai/Kia when it comes to emissions engineering.

I think they are all tarred with the same brush to a certain extent.

Real world testing of the offending VW products showed they were mid-range offenders overall, so not the best but certainly not the worst, the latter of which did include a couple of Korean  vehicles amongst others. I'm not defending VW's actions by the way but I think the punishment meted out to them was relatively heavy because VW do not have any manufacturing facilities in the US unlike most of the other probable offenders.

Hyundai/Kia 'voluntarily' compensated US customers and paid fines but did nothing elsewhere but it has been interesting watching Australian published consumption claims for new Korean vehicles actually worsen compared to the models they replace. Almost unique among any manufacturer selling here :) .

I'd only recommend consider the Korean/German designed diesels because Korean cars tend to be a bit porky and only recent petrol engines have had reasonable technology to achieve reasonable efficiency.

It appears the coming application of GPFs to petrol engines is having a deleterious effect on CO2 emissions.

I guess the increased back pressure is a factor requiring more power/fuel to overcome it.

In Adelaide tomorrow.....at the beach.

Probably as 38 deg C forecast tomorrow. The beach is only 200 metres away and sea is very clear and cool. Too many shark sightings recently to go too far out though :(

I opened up the house last night to let the cool overnight 12 deg C air in, then shut everything up as temperatures soared to 37 deg C during the day.

Competition on its way for Dacia Sandero?

Whilst I have been really pleased with my Logan (Sandero estate with a huge boot), so much so I have taken the ballon payment option at the end of the 3 year PCP and 60,000 miles of comfortable and cheap motoring I would have to look long and hard at the Chinese MG3.

If it is only a facelift version the safety was not great on the 2014 MG3  https://www.euroncap.com/en/results/mg/3/7878

MG3 is a supermini class i think whereas the Sandero is small family class car.

Slight pain with the Sandero/Logan is 12,500 mile servicing where as my Clio Mk 4 is 18,000 which is better for us high milers ie 40-50k a year.

Dacia Sandero

As it says that starting model accounted for only 3% of the Sanderos bought.  Buying a car with no aircon, without a radio etc is just too basic.

The Ambient is a good spec in the Sandero and Logan, the Sandero you get quite neat lights too.  the 1 litre SCE non turbo is quite good, TCE turbo petrol the pick IMO, the diesel shockingly slower than the turbo petrol I felt.  Good fuel tank size at 50 litres though I have got 52 litre in mine and got over 600 miles from a tank.

My Logan is Laureate spec and is still a bargain. Might pul up the second hand values which are already incredible in terms of residuals. £10K car, ballon payment £3,400 on the 3 year 60k lease, could probably get £4500-£5000 on trade in as they are going for a grand more than that on Autotrader.   Owning it has been a revelation as it has been cheap to run ie about 25 p per mile, comfy and competent.

MG3 is shockingly cheap and nasty close-up.

Every bit of it, from cheaply cast alloys to external door trims to interior design and materials, every bit looks 3rd world low rent.

Add the low tech thirsty polluting 1.5 petrol motor and its a total no-no.

I remember when Hyundai & then Daewoo launched in the UK. The cars they were selling then looked way better built than the MG3 does.

Amazing how people are blinded by the little orange octagon.

Owners / Drivers seem to love them and fill in surveys saying so.

Or somebody fills in surveys saying how good they are.   Never something a company selling cars would allow any of their employees to do surely.

Always despised MGs but the I was in the other camp ie member of the Triumph Six club.  Bring back the Triumph car badge (maybe on a Civic R if Honda still own) and I might be tempted.
