Locking/Unlocking Chirp

Featured Replies

I enabled this today which leads me to ask if anyone knows the thinking behind disabling something which can be disabled anyway by the infotainment screen once activated by VCDS.

Why hide it behind VCDS or dealer diagnostics?

Apparently UK law (?) states that an alarm should only indicate lock / unlock visually, and not audibly. This configuration meets this requirement, other countries have different rules. I can’t find a source for this - lots of statements on forums etc. Not sure if a beep could cause an MOT failure?  And yes, I too like the option of a beep / chirp on lock

If that's the case then every car that Audi and Skoda has supplied to me over the last 20 years has been illegal, as they all chirp when the alarm is locked/unlocked.

Oh and the majority of other cars in the car parks I've used over those 20 years too...

My old Fiat Punto beeped when it was locked with the remote as standard and there was no way to turn that off, ditto my Mercedes, in fact I’m struggling to think of a car I’ve owned that didn’t beep/chirp/ make some sort of noise other than the Volvo C30 and I hated it for that! Love my alarm chirp on the vRS

I can’t find a regulation and life is too short to read through EU regulations, but there are multiple authorities suggesting audible tones for remote locking have been regulated against, probably at an EU level. Any regulation would not apply retrospectively, and manufacturers would implement gradually as they did for DRL’s. happy to be proven / told I’m wrong. I’m not aware of any recent cars that make an acoustic confirmation on lock etc, but I don’t use that many different cars. Best background I can find (I accept this is weak) is here: https://www.quora.com/Why-do-some-automakers-use-the-car-horn-to-indicate-a-car-has-been-locked-by-keyless-entry

I had this enabled on my Golf & like you could not understand why it didnt come like that from the factory as you can turn it off in the settings but only once it has been enabled using vcds...bizarre..

It's only an electronic chirp ffs. The actual clunk of the locks is far louder. It's possible to enable the horn but sod that.

The 2 series I’m in currently beeps the horn if you lock the car and the bonnet is still open!

My Skippy doesn't chirp for either action.

Can't find an option to enable/disable in the infotainment system despite being enabled for both by OBDeleven.

With VCDS you have to activate the unlock the acoustic feedback, activate the lock acoustic feedback and activate the acoustic feedback menu control. It should all work then from the infotainment screen. There may be another activation if you don't have an alarm fitted - google translate can tell you the details.

I have been looking for any evidence that there are EU regulations (or UK), but can’t find any, it could be that I’ve missed it but it seems unlikely, as it would have to have been recent (last few years) or current.

I’m therefore going to wind my neck in, change my opinion and suggest the lack of chirp is down to manufacturer choice, presumably their interpretation of ‘local’ market demand.

I did find this, relating to Canada - for information only: 040084_1.pdf

if anyone finds any evidence that there is EU regulation / guidance on car locking system noise emissions (?!) please reference...

Was trying to be subtle, I don't normally do subtle hence probably, why I'm **** at it.

Folding wing mirrors set to close on lock & open when unlock looks far classer, impressive, unannoying & generally, less chavy than an uncouth chirp.

It also gives a valid reason to look back at your car everytime you lock/unlock covering your actual admiration of your own car.

The old saying being "if you don't look back at it, you probably brought the wrong car"

There, more depth, only problem being, its a contradictory view & therefore, unlikely to make you feel any better hence, my original responce.

I must admit, I am a little annoyed that my Octy doesn’t have power folding mirrors, my old Volvo C30 had auto folding on lock and so does my Mercedes CLK (2008 & 2003MY respectively) yet a well optioned 2014 car doesn’t have them! Not that I’ve got the budget, but does anyone know how much work or ££ is it to fit power folding mirrors?

Fekkin' hell! - I was only talking about a slight chirp when car is locked/unlocked and all of a sudden we are on the  psychologists couch!!

Why do you need a valid reason to look back. I stop passing strangers to point out my beautiful purchase and wax lyrical and long about its many attributes before I go on to mention house prices and pensions - stop wait a minute I haven't talked about Brexit yet - where are you going?
