How to be sure that DAB Columbus unit is fit with SSD?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone

as per THIS list http://www.my-gti.com/3983/volkswagen-rns-510-hardware-and-software-firmware-versions

all units with part number ending in 686 should be DAB+ equipped, and these units apper to just be available in latest revisions, ( C14, manufactured CW45/13 onwards - new GPS chip, 40GB SSD hard drive)

so, they should have SSD unit instead of HDD.

I want to fit a RNS510 instead of the RNS315 I have in my 02/2013 SuperB, and it's beginning to become a real pain. I'm buying the latest hardware revision, but looks like VW units hardware revisions don't match SKODA ones

I'm thinking sellers on ebay just copy/paste from random websites and don't actually know what they're selling, because I find many mismatching descriptions and information.

Auction 1: sticker on the (brand new boxed) unit says: 3T0 035 686 (with no letter), HW: H10, SW: 5238, £650, Description says: integrated 30GB HARD DRIVE

Auction 2: DESCRIPTION says: 3T0 035 686H, 40GB SSD , HW: H23, SW: 6270. £799.99

Now, firmware can be upgraded to the latest for both units, but why such a difference on pricing?

What the **** are the hardware differences between these two units, that look perfectly identical, and none of them has "SKODA COLUMBUS" written on the front, like the one in my Octavia2 do

Thanks for reading anyway, and really hope someone can help!

:-)

Software numbers 5238 (and anything which starts with 5***) are not SSD drive units. Only units with software (SW) 6270 and 6276 are SSD drive units.

SSD drive units are all 30Gb hard drive capacity. HDD drive units are all 40Gb hard drive capacity.

The above is relevant for DAB / DAB+ units. Older non DAB units can also have a 30Gb HDD drive.

£799 for an SSD drive DAB unit is rather pricey though.

Excellent explanation, thank you!

I found more units, and specs still don't convince me:

1) NEW, version "N", 40GB SSD, HW: H27, SW:6276. DAB. 849£ (I think this price tag is insanely high)

2) USED, version "L", 40GB HDD, HW: H30, SW: 5274. 621£

3) USED, version "K", 40GB HDD,HW: H27, SW: 5274, £499

So, number 1 has ssd drive, numbers 2 and 3 don't, but number 2 has HW: H30 instead of H27.

All those combinations are driving me mad. The thing that make price grow is DAB. I can live without that, but I'd like a unit with latest hardware revision AND ssd

I'm struggling to find brand new units for a smaller price, I'll keep on searching.

You'll probably find that the "New" units are simply units which are carefully removed when stolen in Latvia and Lithuania. There's not really any bona fide suppliers of new units other than the people who acquire them through various unlawful channels (out the back door of some warehouse perhaps, or from the dealers car lot rather quickly), so I wouldn't get too hung up on that score. Also, HW number revisions are in the main just numerical updates within the system rather than actual hardware changes. Anything 6270 or 6276 are pretty much all the same really, just numbered differently.

As a guide, if you were in the UK you could rock up to my front door and have a DAB SSD unit fitted for about half the price of 1) in your examples.

I've read all the threads but am still wondering why my Columbus is running sw 6270 but has a hard drive.

Previous comments suggest that sw 6270 is only installed on solid state drive units.

The only update seems to be 6276.  Is that correct?
