Headlights?

Featured Replies

I recently purchased a 2014 Octavia estate. Do different models have different headlights?

mine is a 2.0 tdi elegance with reflector lenses for the dip and heads.

but I see from looking that some models have projectors. Why’s this?

Bi-Xenons were an option or standard on some trim levels, and those have projectors.

It's a rubbish cost cutting step on the MK3. On the MK2 and the MK2 Facelift, both Xenons and Halogens had projector units.

Sign of the times I suppose.

Why are Xenons as an optional extra so expensive? But at least you’d get the use out of them!

That's a good question...they're ridiculously expensive compared with some other marques Xenon / LED upgrades. I also found the performance on the O3 Xenons to not be brilliant either. Still, infinitely better than a standard halogen setup. Never tried the FL with the new LED's to compare with the Xenons.

I suppose as well as being Bi-Xenon they also have AFS2 which is licensed from Hella. As well as the software to tie in with GPS data etc. Also require the fitment of headlamp wash and most models also gained cornering fogs in the pack.

Still expensive though. I think mine were £1050.

Because when HIDs are fitted (provided they are above a certain brightness, the only Skoda this doesn't apply to is the Rapid) they also have to fit headlamp washers and headlamp levelling in order to get Type Approval (which is needed to be able to sell cars).

Does the rapid only get the lowly 25W Xenons? Strangely enough, the entry level VW Toureg only gets them too!

Yes, hence there are no headlight washers on many of them with xenons. It makes them look odd IMO.

Subjectively, are they not very bright then? Those systems have to be under a certain lumen figure to get type approval without the washers and levelling, but I've never seen one first hand.

Never been in one to tell - would assume they’ll still be quite a bit better than a halogen bulb!

The halogens are a bit pitiful in dims for sure.

wouldnt mind upgrading mine someway (economically) without going down the route of hids

Plenty of good upgrade options available for the H7 bulbs fitted in the standard dipped headlight.

But less options for the H15 (main beam + DRL) bulbs.
