Convert speed limiter to cruise control?

Featured Replies

I recently bought a 2017 Fabia 1.2 TSi SE. It has a speed limiter, which I experimented with on a recent motorway trip. Although somewhat useful, I have to say that the cruise control on my wife's 2012 Elegance model is far more useful.

And it got me thinking: the speed limiter needs hardware that can (a) monitor the speed, and (b) control fuel supply. Which is exactly what cruise control needs. And the speed limiter controls on the steering wheel stalk are identical to cruise control. So my guess is that the only difference between the two will be software. In which case, is there a software update possible that will convert the speed limiter to cruise control?

I think that the Cruise Control has one more button underneath the wiper stalk.

With the speed limiter you only have the switch on top and on the end of the wiper stalk.

Thanks AG Falco.

The two are are totally different. Cruise control maintains the speed you set it at and it needs to be switched on by the switch on top of the left hand steering stalk. Speed limiter stops you going faster than the the speed you set at and it does not need switching on. Speed Limiter just needs toggling between Cruise Control and Speed Limiter. With cruise control the speed stays the same until you change it. With Speed Limiter no matter how much you press the accelerator you cannot go any faster. To switch between the two press the button underneath the left hand steering stalk and you will see the display change from Cruise Control to Speed Limiter. Press again and it will change back to Cruise Control.

I think you misundersand my question.

I am perfectly aware of the difference between the two. My car has a speed limiter; my wife's has cruise control. I know that some models have both, and the extra button toggles between the two. But if you want ONLY cruise control, you don't need that extra button, and as far as I can see, my SE model has all the hardware necessary to enable it to have ONLY cruise control. I am hypothesising that maybe there could be a software update that REPLACES the speed limiter with cruise control, as in my view the latter is far more useful.

Does a model with speed-limiter only have a way to control the throttle?

i.e. can it 'step on the gas' when presented with a hill to climb?

Having been researching buying a Fabia for the past couple of weeks (hoping to place an order tomorrow) I think its fairly safe to say that there is no option for a speed limiter only on the Fabia.

The S gets the option of cruise control

The SE gets the option of cruise control and speed limiter or if you wish to spend more adaptive cruise control.

The SE-L gets cruise control and speed limiter as standard with the option of adaptive cruise control.

Unless something has changed dramatically in the past few months with specs if your car has additional controls on the indicator stalk I suspect you already have cruise control. You just need to read the manual to find out how to operate it.

Does your car already have the speed limiter and front assist? (My SE model does).

If it does, then it already has all the necessary hardware, so that's £430+VAT just to update some software. Daylight robbery!

Here is another fact. Whilst looking for a car this week (Fabia 110 PS hatch) the dealer located several Monte Carlos which almost met my requirements, the main missing item being cruise. last time the wife had a new motor (June 2015) we looked at a Polo but the car with the deal on it was in stock and had no cruise. That was not an issue, they had a kit in stock that replaced the indicator stalk and was programmed in for less than factory fit cruise. So I asked the Skoda dealer if this was possible with the Fabia, simple answer was no.

On a factory order cruise on a S is £185

On a factory order SE and Monte Carlo cruise and speed limiter is £185

On a factory order SE, Monte Carlo, and Colour edoition ACC is £380

On a factory order SE-L ACC is £235

Not wiper stalk but indicator stalk, button D to swap from ACC to speed limiter.

See manual pages 118 to 121.

So perhaps if you want cruise control you automatically get speed limiter but you then

need the button D below the indicator stalk to swap from one to the other.

extra detail.

It looks like the OP gets all that - He just wants to switch out the Speed Limiter programming and switch in the Cruise programming. No hardware, stalks, or buttons changes.

It seems like it should be very doable with VCDS.

My car has both and I wanted to see if I could make SL the default on startup, rather than CC. I find SL so useful around town. Out on the open road, there’s more time and headspace to switch over to CC.

Anyway - my few enquiries drew a blank - and that should be easier even than the functionality that OP is looking for.

Maybe, OP @cliveb, a question on the VCDS thread might get a response.

Mine only has speed limiter, the quote I was gives was to upgrade a used SE-L that already had cruise control to ACC (Acrive cruise control).

I wonder if we can go from speed limiter to ACC with a new stalk and using the same front assist radar? Anyone done this?

Dont know for the recent Fabia as mine got all the bells and whistles available but VAG USED to offer a new stalk and upgrading software to achieve ACC at something like €150 if it wasn’t present.

No doubt that a new stalk is needed but I’m also convinced that the rest is there hidden inside the CPU. Just need a kick in the a**.

Srvice and upgrading is a theft these days.

@Jedispooner Well - if you have Front Assist - then you have the radar and the ACC module- my reader (Carista) reports like this :

Adaptive cruise control

Part #: 5Q0907572D

Coding: 00000000FE0739 (hex)

Component: ACC Bosch MQB

So, that would look encouraging. It’s seems to be a case of finding someone willing to do it.

Certainly would love to install full ACC myself. Especially as significant parts of the hardware appear to be already there.

If anyone has a full ACC Fabia - it would be great if they could get a scan of what modules they have.  And if part numbers are the same as above.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. Dithane has it spot on - I want to REPLACE the speed limiter with CC, and for that you don't need the extra button on the indicator stalk. Basically my SE has all the hardware needed, so in my mind it should just be a software update. I'll contact Skoda UK to ask if it's possible. (I asked here first because I thought maybe someone here would already know).

Read my original posts, there is no option on any Fabia to have speed limiter alone. The only option available on the SE is speed limiter/cruise. If you have the symbols on your indicator stalk and the switch at the top and the button at the bottom you already have it fitted. Just press the button at the bottom to tab between speed limiter and cruise.

I have a 2016 SE Fabia that came as standard with Speed Limiter but no Cruise Control.

The light/indicator stalk only has the top and end buttons but no button under the stalk.

Thanks AG Falco

Now very confused. No reference anywhere to speed limiter being standard on an SE. Only speed limiter/cruise being an option.

My old Leon only had the top button on the indicator stalk and that was cruise only.

I can assure you that the SE model I have (first registered in Jan 2017) has speed limiter and no cruise control.

The stalk has the switch on top and the side rocker switch, but no button underneath.

My wife's 2012 Elegance model has exactly the same switchgear and has cruise control only - just like your old Leon.

... and just had a look at the UK configurator there - the pics for the interior of the S show it does not have SL buttons on the stalk, but the pics for the SE clearly show the stalk with the SL controls - as @cliveb says. And the SEL pic shows the stalk with the Mode graphic - so it has both SL and CC.  Whew !

Just been having a Google there, Cliveb,  and looking at some VW forums - found nothing yet .. though this on Pistonheads may be of interest to skidpan - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1604744 -- as another Fabia with only SL.

One poster on there ("Krikkit") also reckoned the same kit is on board for both SL and CC. (Apart from the toggling switch).

cars We have a 2015 Mk 3  110PS SE with speed limiter only and the Front Assist radar under the number plate, I sourced a 2017 Mk 3 110PS  SE for my sister-in-law in Jan 2018 and that is the same. I believe the specs changed mid 2017 though and the later 2017 and 2018 may well be different.

if you have speedlimiter, you can add tempomat...

what you need?

- new trim - 6C0 953 501 P / 6C0 953 513 F

- SWAP code - 5E0 054 800

my instructions in Slovak: https://wirer.php5.sk/tempomat/

That link's giving me an error.

Is it to add the speed limiter/cruise control like the SEL, change to cruise but no speed limiter, or fit ACC?

That link works just fine. Try again or deactivate whatever you got that prohibits accessing.

Yup it's working now! Might have to give it a go sometime...
