Cold weather electrical / sensor problems?

Featured Replies

Hello! New Skoda owner and I've just discovered this forum: fantastic resource! Sorry if this is a repeat question, but I'm still finding my way around and couldn't find anything like it.

I have a 2013 3rd generation 4x4 Octavia. We're in Bavaria and its been pretty cold: between -10 and -15 for the last 10 days or so with about 10 degrees of wind chill. The car has been outside, unused, for about a week, and when I got in today the dashboard was lit up like a Christmas tree... there are problems with the ESC, tyre pressure monitoring system, stop/start system and the reversing sensors. I guess the stop/start needs decent heat in the engine to function, but is it possible all the others are just due to the various sensors icing up, malfunctioning due to the cold or having problems with all the slush and grime thrown up from the roads (they've been heavily gritted now for months)? The stop/start turns off and on from the dashboard as usual, but the ESC and reversing sensors are totally missing as far as the computer is concerned. ESC won't even turn off from the dash button. The car starts immediately and there are no other problems immediately apparent .

Does anyone have experience of this or are there some expensive diagnostics on the horizon (along with more snow)?!

Thanks

Callum

I’d say you’ve had a low voltage “Brown-out” and the Battery Voltage needs to come back up by external charging.

This has been mentioned recently in another post, I’ll see if I can see it.

Curious if you still have all those problems after you let the car run for a bit and get up to temperature  and warm all the peripherals as well as charge up the battery back to normal.

Could take a while to get charged, couple of hours at least.

Wow, amazingly quick replies: much better than the BMW forum I used to be on...!

I haven't taken it for a decent drive yet: just the round trip from school to football practice. I had a thought it might be the battery so I'll try a run down the autobahn tomorrow and then plug it in if that doesn't do anything.

Thanks for quick help: I think I might start hanging out on here more!

Follow the instructions in the Manual for connecting the Charger, don’t connect directly across the Battery Terminals.

Switching off all unnecessary power use will help charge you battery faster.

But as you want to heat it all up and recharge it then you will have to use a few electrical bits.

Let us know how you get on ;)

Well, it's had two hours running on the autobahn today and the problem hasn't gone away at all. I  guess I'll try charging the battery but if a couple of hours driving hasn't charged it (and i'm not getting any error messages) then I imagine its probably something more serious.
