EPC light & 'engine'

Featured Replies

My Yeti has been in our garage sheltering from the snow for 4 days, this morning I took it out and  it juddered after three miles and the EPC & 'car skidding' lights came on. I took it slowly for a couple of minutes and then the engine outline light came on as well. I turned around and 'limped home'  as it had obviously gone into that mode.

I've got a Gendan  MaxScan which is only part compatible with my 75,000 mile 2013 Yeti 1.2 petrol, it says P0303 cylinder 3 misfire.

Having read the various posts about EPC lights, I propose changing the spark plugs and leads to see if that cures the fault.

Failing that, is there anyone in the Newmarket area with a VCDS who could scan it, please?

The number 3 lead was susceptible to heat from the turbo as I recall and was subject of a fix.

?

When were the Spark Plugs last changed?

They are a 40,000 mile Service Schedule consumable.

Now most Dealerships are replacing the spark plugs at a Major Service. well 2nd major service, and 4th type thing. 40,000 ish.

& then there is the lead issue.

Thanks for your replies, keep them coming.

Original plugs replaced at 40,000 miles with Iridiums. Have already bought new Iridiums but haven't got around to fitting - d'oh!

Will fit new plugs and probably leads, too, just to be thorough.

Hopefully.......

Brijo, just waxed it and wanted different horsepower........

Look at the iridium plugs I just took out.

They look a bit sooted.

Cant see the tips on them.   When they went in what were they pre gapped at, and were all 4 checked that they were gapped correctly?

They all come with 'Iridium' plugs, and you get different Iridium Plugs and some like DENSO can be better than the VW OEM NGK ones.

So what plug gap do you need is it 0.8mm?

What are those plugs showing now if you check the gap?

Do you know about the 3rd leads extra protection?

Yep, new ones to 0.8mm.     BUT what's that about No 3 lead extra protection?

It's still in limp home mode despite me erasing fault codes, so going to fit new leads - any suggestions for better quality ones?

I bumped an old thread on the HT leads,

But just this week someone was posting on a 1.2 TSI engine in some model and the new leads they got at the dealership with the protection.

Known issue.

AwaoffSki, thanks, I've read the other post having come in from the garage and lit the log-burning fire - nice!

My plan is to buy the highest quality leads and keep the old leads in the boot ( minus the offending No.3 lead )

Ah haaah! When removing No3 plug lead from the coil unit  ( with difficulty as it was stuck ) I noticed white dusty residue. The other three were clen and like new.

Sprayed contact cleaner into No3 on coil unit and compared it to the other three, they all had a central pin but No3 had burnt away which was what the residue was.

NOW.....for my theories:- was the burning fault caused because No3 ignition lead was breaking down due to proximity to heat shield OR is it just coincidence that No3 on coil unit failed?

Any discussion welcome.

Photos from left:- No4 on coil unit is good, coil unit end of No3 plug lead in vice showing white dust, No3 on coil unit showing dust and missing central pin.

Thanks
