Petrol Yeti 1.8/1.4 tfsi comparison

Featured Replies

Anyone owned both? I would like to find how they compare for drivability, they are the same power and torque but I can only assume the smaller engine is more buzzy?

I already have a 170 diesel Yeti, which the missus drives as a her daily, but I'm a petrol head and while it does all I need I just hate the engine noise and character.

I'm also very worried about DPF problems as it is only being used for short journeys,

A lot of the problem is my car is an Audi S4 so it's rather a hard act to follow.

If I change the Yeti I will be looking for a facelift, and there are a very few 1.8 facelifts and I need to know if I need to wait for one of those.

Thanks in advance

1.4 is thin on the ground as well. I’d personally be looking for the 1.4 l&k. That said I’m more than happy with the 1.2

The 1.4 150 bhp is only available in the L&K that's why I didn't get one last year, they were out of my budget.

Glad your happy with the 1.2 but I need 4x4 and more power to pull a caravan.

From 2015 the 1.8 was replaced with 150ps 1.4 - Both were only available laterly with the L&K (from 2013) -  I remember as in 2015 I was looking to change my Superb I , but as you have discovered yourself - it was outside my budget and I was worried about the boot size when fitted with a spare.

I changed from a CR170 to a 1.4 L&K last November because the town miles I do were taking their toll on the DPF. The 1.4s are thin on the ground and I had to travel some distance to get it but am very happy with it. It doesn't have the solid punch the 170 had e.g when starting to accelerate from 30mph, but then it is 100NM less torque so no surprise. It still shifts and so quiet!

The engine revs more readily than the 170 but the turbo assists from 1750revs so it doesn't need thrashing. Of course it does require more gear changes but then it's a petrol.I wouldn't describe it as buzzy. The accelerator pedal resistance is the same. Also, because the car is quiet, It doesn't intrude compared to the diesel chug. Having said that I am comparing a 7.5 year old 170 with a 7 month old 1.4. I recently had a merc 180 and Fiat Tipo as hire cars and preferred the response of the yeti engine (ok, I preferred the yeti in every aspect, but we are discussing engines here!).

They also differ in that the heating system also works quicker. The 1.4 prioritises heating the water so the moving parts can get to operating temp asap (and thus the cockpit heater). At times when doing a lot of cold stop/starts I have noticed the water gets up to temp yet the oil temp display is still blank (under 50 degs).

I still have to try towing my 1250kg caravan which I'm sure won't be so sprightly but everything is a compromise and I doubt it will struggle. I was just totally spoiled with the torque/weight ratio of the 170.

One of the best things I hadn't appreciated before I bought it was the heated front windscreen. I start the car, push a button and by the time I have scraped the side windows, the windscreen is running water - great!

I'm sure other will point out if I'm wrong but I believe the 1.8 had reliability issues and is more thirsty. Of course I'm biased as we all like to justify our own purchases!

I hope this helps your deliberations.

I've owned 2 1.8 TSi Octavia's and found the engine reasonably quick , very tractable (from low revs) and reasonably economical - the 2wd returned mid 30's MPG, whereas the 4wd drive returned low 30's MPG.

I then recently test drove a 2017 1.4 TSi Yeti and found this drove very similar to the older 1.8 TSi. This is perhaps not a surprise, given similar torque figures for both engines.

I recall the 1.8 sounding good when revved out, whereas the 1.4 was somewhat less characterul - perhaps not a major consideration.

I had planned to buy a 1.8 TSi Yeti, but the on-going reliability of the engine put me off. I personally know of an owner who had an engine virtually seize after 70k miles, leading to a 4 year old car being virtually worthless /  scrap. There are additional concerns regarding oil consumption and timing chain / tensioner failure.

The 1.4 TSi Yeti returned similar fuel returns to my old 1.8 4wd Octavia, during an extended test drive.

The only thing putting me off replacing my 140 BHP TDi 4wd Yeti with a 1.4 was the choice of interior trim (I couldn't live with the L&K brown) and high price / relatively rarity of the model.

Thanks for that Thompson2.

I imagine I will end up with a 1.4 as they are hard enough to find, in fact it's only just recently found out that the 1.8 was ever put in the facelift and I've only ever seen 1 for sale.

Yes I had read about the 1.8 having had a few problems, I'm just a bit old school being biased towards bigger engines, although (without wanting to worry you) the 1.4 had a bit of a troubled start in the Polo GTI and the Fabia VRs let's hope they are sorted now.

Yes heated screens are brilliant our 170 has one, just a shame it's the wife's daily lol.

I'm hoping that price's will fall now the Karoq is out, although I think the L&K 1.4's will be sought after just because of their limited numbers.

Thanks pinkpanther

Yes I know what you mean about the chocolate seats they are the worst bit about the L&K.

I would have liked an Octavia, either a Scout or VRs but Skoda in their wisdom won't do a 4x4 with a petrol engine.

Really good of our government to get everyone driving diesels and then do a complete 180 on them.

Fortunately the older 1.4 (twincharger) engine in the Fabia vRS is entirely different to the newer 1.4 TSi in the Yeti / Octavia etc.

The later engine is widely used across the VAG brand and I'm not aware of any major reliability issues.

The twincharger engine is however one to be avoided, although was never fitted to Yeti's (or Octavia's).

That's good to know, must admit I thought it was the twincharger.

Even after the 1.4TSI Twinchargers were dropped in the Fabia, Ibiza, Polo, A1, Beetle, Golf, Sirocco, Alhambra,

VW did 1.4 TSI Twincharger Tiguan's for Australia which i do not think have the same issues.
