Dash cam fitting on new car

Featured Replies

I'm getting a dash cam this week for the new 245. Has anyone fitted one to a newer vRS? Just wondering what the interior comes apart like. Last thing I want to do it break something on a brand new car - or just as bad, create a rattle! Normally very good at stuff like this, just a bit nervous with it being new.

Also, where did people wire into? I will go searching for what I need with a test lamp, but would be handy to have an idea!

Thanks all!

I haven't got a vRS but I've got a MK3 Octavia and a fitted a dashcam hardwired last week.

Used this kit from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0789G3QT8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 this video was really useful for getting the glovebox out

I ran the wide under the roof lining, down the rubber of the a pillar then into the glovebox.  I can't remember which fuse socket I used (it was a small 10amp one) which I'd tested to make sure it was a switched live and I used one of the bolts under the side panel to earth the hardwire kit to.

Only took me around 30-45 mins and I have no rattles :)

I used the rear wiper fuse. Getting glove box back is a pain in the bum ! Be careful to not overlap the airbag.

Mrs Statto wants to get a dashcam for our new Octy, but I've never done any thing like this before - can anyone recommend a good dashcam installer in Sussex / Surrey / South London, as I'd want to get it hardwired but don't have the confidence to do it myself?

I'm not the most practical person but it really was simple to do.  The most fiddly bit was getting the glovebox damper back on.  If you watch a youtube video or two and take your time it really is easy and there's very little scope to go wrong :)

I'll be giving this a go during the week as I collect my car tomorrow, I'll update with any advice I can such as the location of the rear wiper fuse.  The video above is really useful, I have already studied it! :)

Fitted one on mine and as said pretty straight forward, fed the wire down the passenger side A pillar panel and into the fuse box. Then used a piggyback fuse into the rear wipe fuse as I wanted is to only come on when ignition was on.

as mentions able the hardest part is getting the glove box fitted back in place but after a couple of times you get the hang of it

Can you remember which fuse number was the rear wipe? (or is it on a diagram on the fuse cover?)

Just get the dealer to wire it in for you. Mine did, no charge.

That is a useful video but I have an idea crossing at the top of the A pillar might obstruct the curtain airbag so went a slightly different route by poking a tie wrap down  between the screen and the A pillar cover into the dashboard space and using it to pull the cable up by the corner of the screen,  then up under the trim as per the video.

If you buy from Halfords they fit for £30. It's an easy job to do yourself, hardest part is re fitting the glove box.

Reading the nightmares people have had from here with the Glovebox there is no way I'd let anyone in Halfords anywhere near anything more sophisticated than a Screenwash top up or a Wiper Blade replacement at a push but I'd have had to had my hands amputated at the neck long before the latter!

Nothing too it,I didn't even buy a power supply just soldered wires into the original charger their came with the cam and added an inline fuse,I used the lane departure fuse(isn't fitted in my car).48 from memory.

Glovebox is a pain in the hoop and don't obstruct the pillar airbag

I have a dashcam but not inclined to hardwire. I doubt their reliability  as I have had to exchange one model after a few weeks being faulty. It would have been a nuisance to uninstall it. Also I like to remove it from the windscreen if parked in a desolate area. If they nick sat navs then cameras are equally desired.

Great, thank you guys! Made me feel a lot better about it now, as wasn't looking forward to have to splice into the loom on a brand new motor!

Haven't looked at the dash cam yet, but I'm thinking about a permanent live hardwire, so it will pick up anyone near the car when it's parked up.

Will update once I've fitted!

You can still remove the dashcam from the screen, most of them use a mini USB connector anyway :)

Search the site for numerous problems doing the permanent supply install.

My brother had his wired in on his A5 by the guy who did his tints, worked a treat then his Off side LED Headlamp stopped working. Fixed under warranty at £1800 but it was caused by connecting the dashcam upto the Permanent Live Fuse for the Headlamp.

I'm new to the Octy scene to be honest. Had Mk1 Fabia's for years - much simpler!

Sounds blummin' awful  :o :speechless:

Not sure if this is any help but maplin are selling nextbase dashcams at great prices, I got halfords to price compare on the 112 and 212 models.

Also if you can find stock they have micro SD cards at good prices. http://www.halfords.com/cycling/cycling-technology/helmet-cameras/toshiba-32gb-micro-sd-card?_$ja=kw:drytinder|tsid:40392&cm_mmc=Affiliates-_-PerformanceHorizon-_-drytinder-_-TopLink

Just a footnote, insurance company will insist on a hardwire setup before it will consider dash cam footage.

Is that true for all of insurance companies?

Submitted dash cam footage to my insurance co. Last year. No questions whatsoever about installation method.

I can't I'm afraid, but it is in the owners manual

I have purchased the Nextbase 512GW, £119 from Argos but bought Gift Cards at 7.5% discount through work so only cost me £110. Need to get a Car Kit and snaffle a Memory Card from work. Nice little job for the weekend.
