This thread is a set of entirely personal posts recording opinions offered by Briskies regarding the trustworthiness or otherwise of other Briskies plus perhaps other vendors on platforms such as eBay.

IT IS NOT A GUARANTEE. If in doubt, ask. A good Brisky will not be embarrassed by someone asking for a reference on their trustworthiness. An iffy one may bitch & whine. Form your own conclusions.

Use the thread search facility for the name or username in which you are interested.  You will either find an entry or entries giving a good reference or not.  Known scallies will hopefully be listed at the top of the thread but that will depend on you guys pm-ing me about scallies so I can update this post.

MY PERSONAL ADVICE for non-trade buying & selling, based on my experience of using the web and designing/implementing ecommerce systems:

1. Doing business personally or via a trusted third party:

Buyers: Carefully inspect the goods to make sure they are what you were offered and that they are in the condition advertised.  Ask polite questions to clarify any uncertainties. Rubbishing the item to the Seller in the hope of getting a lower price may work but occasionally work but always builds resentment in the seller.  If you want to offer less than the asking or agreed price, ask politely if a lower figure acceptable.  Remember, if you want a good reference, be nice!  If a payment type has been agreed beforehand, use that.  If not, ask the Seller what is acceptable.  Remember, cash talks louder that paper or plastic.

Sellers: Describe your goods accurately including any faults or deficiencies.  You're more likely to get a better deal and a happy customer if you are straight with them.  Caveat emptor (buyer beware) may be the legal view, but that won't help build a good set of customer references for you.  If you expect cash, make sure Buyers know this up front so they can make the appropriate arrangements.

Both: Payment via Paypal, Amazon, GooglePay and other online means may be acceptable to both parties, but Paypal gift - whilst not incurring charges - offers NO PROTECTION for the Buyer, unlike the option for buying goods which charges a small commission.  Also, providing bank details for direct transfer can be risky - think of all those spam emails trying to get you to part with just that information.  Finally, if cheque is the agreed payment method remember you can call your bank to get a reference during the week - although they may charge you.

2. Doing business remotely:

Buyers: Carefully examine the pictures and description of the goods to make sure they are what you want; ask polite questions to clarify any uncertainties. If you want to negotiate, do so politely.  Remember, if you want a good reference, be nice!  Use the agreed payment type or ask.

Sellers: Describe your goods accurately including any faults or deficiencies; the more photos the better.  You're more likely to get a better deal and a happy customer if you are straight with them.  Caveat emptor (buyer beware) may be the legal view, but that won't help build a good set of customer references for you.  Be clear as to what collection or shipping options you offer and how long you expect it to take you to make the shipment.  Make it clear what insurance cover (if any) is included in your shipping and be prepared to discuss increasing it and at what cost.

Both: Unless you are completely comfortable with your Seller, I strongly suggest you DO NOT USE PAYPAL (or other) GIFT as it offers NO BUYER PROTECTION WHATSOEVER. Also, providing bank details for direct transfer can be risky - think of all those spam emails trying to get you to part with just that information.  Finally, if cheque is the agreed payment method the Seller shoud hold the goods until the cheque has cleared.

Packing:

Carriers range from the conscientious to the downright bloody-minded (just like everyone else) so pack goods to withstand a rugby scrum.  You need to consider bruise, drop from 1m, crush and - especially for unusual-shaped items - attempts by carriers who can't or won't read directions and who will try to fit the packages into shapes and spaces they are not intended to fit.  In general terms, think the worst and add 50%.  The minor packaging cost is nothing compared to the grief and cost of dealing with returns and customer/carrier claims.

Carriers: (I'll update this section later with more info)

In general, small packets are cheapest and most convenient via Royal Mail.  You can use Recorded Delivery even for second class mail and you should always get a proof of posting (free) from the Post Office.

Next size up try Hermes (myhermes.co.uk) or Collect Plus from your local 7-11 store (collectplus.co.uk).

Thereafter I'd suggest a parcels broker such as parcel2go.com (the one I use) who will find you the best price on their books for your parcel.

Do check insurance cover and also check for the Highlands & Islands highr charge band most carriers use.

Afterwards:

Buyers: Check your parcels on receipt, noting and ideally photographing any damage or defects.  Let the carrier and Seller know as soon as you can; many carriers require you to tell them about transit damage within 2 business days of delivery so don't dawdle. Keep all the packaging in case it needs to be examined. It's the purchaser of the shipment (usually the Seller) who is responsible for any problem follow-up.

Once you're happy with your purchase let the forum know, including comments on what worked and what (if anything) didn't.  Remember, be polite.

Sellers: Deal politely and in a businesslike manner with any Buyer issues; the old saw about "the customer is always right" may not be fully applicable these days but good customer service will buy you more business than anything. As noted above, if you arranged the shipment it's your responsibility to resolve any issues.

Regards, Mike

I think this sort of thread is a very good idea although I think a mod will have to authorise it. I'm sure there is a suggestion to the forum section and I posted that I thought there should be such a topic.

Bought from kenich, no problems at all :)

Other forums have a feedback system for sales, simplified ebay style.

I'll try to keep my original post updated from the thread until the mods decide on an "official" solution.
