Conversion from 1.4 16V to 1.8T

Featured Replies

Hey lads, I currently drive a 1.4 16V Fabia Mk1 with the AUB engine (74 kW). I'd really love to cram a 1.8T in that car, since I already spent a ton of money and time on it.

I've seen a few conversions on the internet, mostly videos, but with little to no info on modifications involved in the process.

My first idea was to buy a Seat with the 1.8 engine and swap necessary parts until I have a fully functioning Fabia 1.8T. However, after reading about the Octy RS, the AUQ engine really caught my interest, boasting 178 HP which would turn any old Fabia into a mini road rocket. Using the terms "Fabia" and "AUQ" together on Google didn't bring any useful results so I'm looking for someone experienced with this specific task.

Namely:

  • which engine code(s) to look for?
  • is the current dash cluster compatible?
  • is the "bordnetz" compatible?
  • is the throttle pedal compatible?
  • what are the potential issues during the conversion (e.g. parts not fitting, no room for some parts...)?
  • what are the potential issues after the conversion?

I'd really like to get some tips before I shell out a large sum of money on a donor car so I don't end up with two heaps of junk in front of my house.

Cheers :)

Welcome.

Have you looked at a few conversions on this forum yet.

Fabia Project section might be quite useful as there are ones that might interest you.

Bottom of page 1 then there are others.

The Fabia is a Polo so look for 1.8T converted 9N Polos on the web.

The electronics make it tricky but it's still a big job, custom exhaust etc. will also make it expensive, don't worry about the 178 BHP AUQ, you can get that from remapping, concentrate on finding a late 1.8T drivetrain with fly-by- wire throttle.

You'll need the complete engine, gearbox and wiring loom, you'll need VRS/2.0 struts for the bigger brakes and driveshafts as well.

It would be much better to start with a 2.0 Fabia since most of the running gear is already there.
