Center air vents not working unless the center air vent button is pressed?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

It's been doing my head in for a while now but thought I'd just quickly ask, as searching only returns results relating to Auto mode being enabled.

I was doing a 100+ mile journey this weekend and randomly I remembered that the air for some reason doesn't come out of the center vents.

The car had been up to temp and blowing lovely warm air out of the other vents for ages however regardless of whether it was in Auto mode or not, I couldn't get anything to come out of the center vents.

The only time I could get air, was when I activated the directional button for the front facing air.

When pressing the Dual Climate menu button, it shows red arrows from the top vents when there isn't anything coming out either?

I ran a scan and nothing came up, so thought I'd double check.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Was the same in my Mk2 and is in my Mk3. Cold air comes out automatically  only if the air conditioning is working hard in hot weather ; but otherwise a trickle hot/cold- at most. Must be some logic there.

Do you not just set the temperature and press auto ?

With CC in auto mode, hot air is normally pumped through the floor vents as heat rises and cold air will be diverted through the windscreen/dash vents as cold air sinks.

Obviously if you override the auto mode and select the vents you want to use you can control this yourself.

Shouldn't that mean that in manual mode (change the speed) it should use all of the vents unless you set the direction manually?

Possibly but I've not had mine a month yet and haven't really had it out of auto mode.

It still makes sense even in manual to pump warm air to the floor and cool air to the top vents.  It can be unpleasant to have your face blasted with hot or cold air too so maybe it's a design feature whichever mode i.e. you have to choose to have air blown in your face?

The other thing to consider is if you say set a speed of 4 and set airflow to all vents, each vent section will have a lot less airflow than if you set it to a single vent point.  If we assume that floor/face/windscreen all receive equal airflow, at any given speed you'll only feel a third of the airflow force than if you selected just one vent.

Having said that, I did see a youtube video about re-calibrating the HVAC, might be worth a try?

I still don't understand why one would even want to paly with the cc,set temp and auto, forget about it ,all year round, once in a while however I press the air care button out of boredom.

Automatic works fine for me. It's only been in hot UK summers, after being parked in the sun, that I need to demand cold air from the central vents for a few minutes.

And of course, in cold weather, the automatic setting does not blast cold air at your face, and gets on with warming and demisting the cab. Unless you need to manually demist MAX for a few minutes, under cool, wet and humid conditions.

Sometimes I get a cold/hot face lol - random, I know.

Just seems weird. If I don't want air coming out of a particular vent, I would just close it manually.

I'm used to being in cars, that if you just had it turned on, air would flow through all of the vents and only open/close depending on recirc, directional buttons etc.

I'll try the recalibration method, but I imagine it's just a quirk on the car.

Ironically, it's going back in December anyway :D

Not the same issue but I have noticed that sometimes the right hand of the two central vents blows out colder air than the left hand.  This is of course when the system is set to sync up and not in dual mode to have one side colder than the other.

Weirdly it seems to be more pronounced when turning corners....I seem to get a blast of cold air??!?

Possible flap issue for both the OP and myself?

Isn't there also some humidity sensor in this model of Octavia too? I know because it was mentioned a lot in the list of new features.

Could this be doing something?

It is normal behaviour for an auto-climate system to modulate which vents pass the air & at what temperature & for me the one on the Octavia is particularly good.

When you start & its cold, the centre vents dont blow cold air in your face until the air coming from the HVAC system is starting to increase.

The same in summer, it wont hit you in the face with a slug of red-hot air while its been sitting in the sun all day.

If you feel the need to feel air in your face you can change the way the system behaves by selecting "light", "normal" or "strong" settings from the auto climate.

This modifies the blower speed & vents which are used.

However, I agree with 181ce, I havent touched by climate settings since I got the car except for turning on the heated rear screen in the winter.

I really like how the cabin temperature is maintained without the feeling of air blowing at you & it even activate the heated screen for demisting & AC for humidifying or cooling automatically.

LOL......well that is interesting. On my previous 8 cars I have never noticed this! Still if its a common thing, at least it's not something I need to attack the dealer with whilst the car is under warranty.

Thanks for searching for me and providing the post! :)

Foolishly, I didn't bother checking the likes of Google first, and spent ages trying to find what could be opening and letting in cold air whilst I'm turning corners etc and could never find it.

I haven't had the chance to check the car yet to be honest (I cycle to work etc) but I'll try resetting the HVAC and see how it goes :)
