Can start DSG car without depressing brake pedal?!!

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, went for a remap earlier but my car didn't like it. Well the remap worked however when getting back the car wouldn't start 1st time, always 2nd time and each 1st attempt would display the airbag and EPC light, we are still trying to figure out whats going on here,

anyway as I had always started the car with my foot on the brake.,my car is a DSG I wasn't aware of this but the car can be started without having to have my foot on the brake pedal. Now as I know all autos require this safety feature. Does anybody know what is going on with it?

Kind regards!

My 59 plate DSG 2.0 PD starts without a foot on the brake, but I pretty much always do out of habit.

Mine is a 2012 VRS DSG CR170 and can start the vehicle without depressing the brake pedal. However the 'Green' foot light always comes on the dashboard to advice you to press the pedal. On the other hand My dads old 2013 A4 started only with depressing the brake and also in his new Q3.

Haven't tried mine but assume it is the same as all others. The interlock feature requiring foot on brake is on moving the DSG lever isn't it?

Good to know it isn't just me and my car is acting oddly.

You could be right about not being able to move the DSG lever without pressing the brake pedal actually!

Used to be would only start in Park or neutral

Few years ago (4 years ?) was changed so also need to press brake to start

I do believe you aren't talking about interlock - just whether you need your foot on the brake or not? On my DSG (was mapped), it does not require foot actually on brake in order to start.

Hmmm, well accorinng to some the car should not be able to be started, basically turn the key fully without holding the brake down. However it seems that indeed the car will start but you cannot select D/P/R/N/S on the DSG without holding the brake pedal so perhaps this is correct.

It's basically what the remap guy said to me, we cannot find out why the remap won't take correctly.

Maybe I am talking out of my tailpipe, on my 2006 Dsg I can only start in P or N.

As far as I am aware, you can only engage gear by putting footbrake on.

It also needs to be in P to remove the key, you can't take the key out in N, you also need to put the footbrake on to remove key, well I am in that habit anyway

Most Automatics (and Vag's DSG) have an inhibitor switch built into the gearbox, as it suggests it inhibit's the car car from starting when in drive and reverse; thats why they can be started with out the need to put your foot on the brake.

This all makes sense, it's not good how paranoid these people who work on cars make me with information that may not quite be accurate!

Thanks everyone.
