2500 down and 2 years at... am I mad

Let's say for arguments sake you woke up and thought, new car, on a lease thing. Lets say it's a 2500 down and 23 months at 325ish, so 10k over 2 years. New car, all the toys 200ish petrol ponies. Happy days.

That night, happy, you've made the right choice of grey, you spy an old magazine in the rack.  Wow you forgot about this one, it's a review about the new 2006 jaguar, xk, 4.2v8, 60k all aluminium. You read on remembering how 60k would be a stupid amount to spend on a car.

Another beer later you're on autotrader/pistonheads and looking at 10k xk's... you begin to wonder, is it worth the punt?

A few beers later you realise it's just a trap, nothing wrong with your 2k citigo, how you laugh. But the beer worm is in your head... 10k on a new 'safe' car that you hand back, or something a little mad, a little once in a lifetime, dare I say classic... that might cost you, you might end up with nothing after 2 years too...

It does not have to have a v8, oh my so many choices now...

What would you find yourself glancing at? Other than the brochure for the new car you have'nt ordered... Or would you sign and be done with the 'new'?

Disclaimer: I know I'm never likely to own an e-type :( or a posh mondeo.

An Evoque.......and I don’t care if people say it’s a hairdresser’s car. It’s the right size for us and, most days, avoids the requirement  to fit chains when crossing the Alpine Hwy in winter and deals with the unsealed logging roads through the forests.    It’s comfortable and quiet apparently and gives excellent economy.  Vision is good enough for me and rear seat space irrelevant.

I won’t make the mistake of selling the C4P though but the ‘white goods’ won’t be missed.

Merc AMG e class??...   A very old one with astronomical mileage.

Just for the noise of course!

Doesn't matter what I bought I'd always be looking for the next one or the toy or something 'more' practical.

If I could cut my mileage I'd consider (just consider mind) a 500hp XFR Supercharged V8.

Or maybe a Panamera turbo

Or maybe a tricked up pickup

Or maybe a Dodge Challenger Hellcat

Or  maybe a Landy Defender as an 'investment'

Or maybe......

Colin, I think you need to stop drinking beer.

Wine instead :)

What and end up like you?

Well, he can dream. :)

I did this. I was paying £425 a month for a pretty much new Kia Optima because it looked nice and was economical and it was white.

I then decided I could save money by buying a Superb, so I chopped in the Optima for a decent part ex price and bought a less monthly Superb. One year later and 3 non fault accidents later I decided it needed to go. So I got browsing again...exactly the same as you Colin...Jaguar XJ L Portfolio 3.0 Diesel. Reading the brochure from 2011, seeing it's original RRP, plus the options.

Found a few on autotrader, got a deal. Took the plunge. Bought a caviar red one with all the toys! Slightly more a month than the Superb, less economical and has been less reliable in the first 4 months of ownership but...it's a Jaguar, it's massive and it puts a huge grin on my face when you find some twisty roads to play on!

Take the plunge!

lump sum now on an oldie, you'd like to think that 2 yrs later you could sell it on and get some return - whereas those sums on a new lease is money you'll never see back again

that said, there's no knowing what additional expenses your oldie will cost you during those 2 years that you wouldn't expect to shell out on a new car

as for me ? 10k lump sum ? I'd probably try and find a boxster or MX-5

Colin,  being serious the XK is a lovely car. It was on Wheeler Dealers a few years ago and despite the faults and the scary parts prices I still wanted one for my mid life crisis. The longer I thought about it the more I realised how impractical it was for a daily driver and expensive to be sat on the driveway as a weekend toy.

Keep the Citigo and spend the money with diving experiences of your most lusted over cars, a driving holiday or two and spare yourself the maintenance and insurance costs.

Or putting your sensible hat back on

£10k for a nearly-new Rapid/Octavia/Superb?

You're getting the supposed reliability of modern, Skoda servicing costs, but no having to hand it back.

Stop drinking beer, no way :) Well it has crossed miming, I stick to one or two a night at the most...

Choices choices choices, a 2009 3.6 superb falls well below 10k ;)

Appreciating classic could work, forgot to say I think, I'm after something fairly boot / bike / walking kit friendly.

The TVR, MX5; had one, is mighty appealing.

I think its' the 'renting' it, and never seeing anything for the cash. If the box of spanners I do buy for 8k ends up costing me 2k over 2 years, then there is a chance I'll still get 5k for it... so still 'quids' in.

SWMBO made a good suggestion, just hire a car/van when you want to go away.

Then you have to bring in the insurance, for some crazy reason, premiums on a 10k 'old' car are more than a 38k new one... the reason I was given... you're more likely to look after a new car. pfft...

Premiums on a 'classic' are lower however but mileage limits are tighter.

But what constitutes a 'classic' seems to be quite random.

So I didn't have any beer last night... but was so sleepy I was a nodding keyboard donkey.

I opened my laptop to a set of tabs I don't remember opening. No nothing like from russia with love,  but a load of van sites... I guess my subconscious is pulling me towards been stuck behind caravans :D

It's a really interesting journey :) @Chris those jags look amazing...

Lol....my mum bought a new fiesta and her premiums went up!!. She changed from a 2004 Fiesta Auto to a new Fiesta Auto - they change the story depending on YOUR situation!!

Reminds me of car sales people who trash your car when you are trading in but it is an 'excellent' choice to the new sucker looking at it a few days after you trade in........

We're only here once, and for a very short time.

It's a car, not your house. Buy with your heart, not your head.

the alcohol fairy started my down the road to getting a pre-reg M4 only a couple of months ago. Not sure if it was a sensible move yet  (insert slightly nervous laugh emoticon)

if i did that, i'd probably be broke, divorced and homeless.

You're only supposed to do it once or twice!

Once would be enough

This thread is my worst nightmare...

I'm going through the same thoughts at the moment, albeit not looking to take action just yet

For the Practical but Powerful - a 4.4 TDV8 Range Rover (on an '11 plate or newer) fits the bill for me.

I was looking at Porsche 911's around the 25k mark but SWMBO wants something you can fit stuff in the boot of :)

Beer has never been an issue for me! So all of mine is done clean and sober :-S

Normally the Porsche is best to have a healthy Servicing, Maintenance and just incase fund for, but the RR needs an even bigger one.

Yeah.  I'd be looking to get good warranties with either to be honest.  Porsche servicing (at Main Dealer) is really expensive.  I'm lucky to have a Land Rover independent specialist around the corner from me so if I went the RR route, I'd use them.

I used to have a 1989 RR Classic (JE Engineering Special with a 4.2 V8) - wish I'd have kept it!
