VCDS Recommendations

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm thinking about getting a coding system and fiddling about a bit with my 2018 FL estate.

I thought I could start with some simple mode (cornering fog lights for instance) and go from there. But I'm not sure what coding system I should get. It'll only be used on the one car (probably). Any suggestions, tips, or quick breakdowns of the options would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

If you're going to get one, make sure you get a proper Ross Tech one. Loads of Chinese replicas knocking about.

You will pay a pretty penny for one but it's worth it. Don't want cheapo device scrambling your car.

Have a look at an OBDEleven, much cheaper than VCDS and does pretty much all the same stuff. It’s certainly easy to use and I’ve done all my coding changes on it.

If it's just for the one car, why not visit someone who already has it? That will be much cheaper than either purchasing VCDS or OBDEleven for yourself.

For a one off block of changes, this is probably best.

But that then restricts you should new coding options become apparent. Whilst VCDS can be pricy, OBDeleven is cheap and very good for what it is. I’ll say it again though, if you do go down that route, learn how to code yourself and NOT rely on the apps. The recent thread on here should be enough of a warning now.

Do you have a link to that thread at all?

Another +1 for OBDEleven. Used it for various tweaks and retrofits and much cheaper than VCDS. Can only echo the above and do it properly with the long coding/adaptations rather than the apps and credits.

Yeah, for the price, OBDEleven seems like a decent option. 50 Euros and the app is free. I might give this a go.

How easy is it to screw things up though, is a question....

Can I take 'snapshots' for instance of current settings, so that if it all goes wrong I can re-flash the settings?

To do long coding you will also need to pay £20 for the PRO pack. It has a history tab which saves the previous coding so you can change it back if you make a mistake. Stay away from the apps and long code yourself following the coding thread on this page and you’ll be fine :)

You can also take backups of controllers which basically extracts all the coding and adaptation settings. You can email these to make them easier to read etc. too.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, I just ordered obdeleven and upgraded the app to pro. Looking forward to playing around a bit, and hopefully not breaking anything ;)

Enjoy having a play when it comes, remember to post your adaptations when done and your certain that they have been successfull, plus any issues with any post them and the forum is generally very good at responding with, fixes or opinions.

There's a great wealth of knowledge on here
