Eco Mode - software bug?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Tried Eco mode for the first time this week and noticed what I think is a software bug.

On my VRS DSG Octavia III, putting the car in Eco put both the car and the gearbox into Eco mode. Upon shutting down the engine and then starting back up for the next journey, both the car and gearbox started in Eco mode.

On my Karoq, putting the car in Eco mode put both the car and the gearbox into Eco mode. However, upon shutting down and starting back up, the car remains in Eco mode but the gearbox defaults to Normal mode, I have to press the eco mode button again for the gearbox to go into Eco mode.

This happens every time and was not a one-off.

Is anyone elses Karoq doing this?

Ta

Andy

Yes this has been discussed i multiple other topics in the Octavia, Kodiaq and Superb forums.  It is mentioned in the manual also that this happens.  So technically, its not a bug, its a Feature :)

I thought I'd sussed it on my MK3 Superb (using Individual mode) but the setting only stuck for a day or so, and now its reverted back to the symptoms you describe.

I just switch the engine on, and switch straight to Eco/Individual before I move off.

Yes it is annoying. I use Individual Mode thinking it would remember the setting. It does very everything except the gearbox. Strange feature.

So, what does the ECO mode do differently?

As far as i can see, it only switches displays to show consumption data and engages the freewheeling on deceleration. Seems unnecessary, as the engine shuts off fuel supply to the engine anyway in that situation, so only "benefit" is no engine braking?

The benefits (as I have found) are:

  • Coasting Function when you release the accelerator - Engine Braking kicks in below 20MPH automatically, or if you tap the break, the coasting is disabled
  • Accelerator sensitivity is less, so you need to press harder/further to get a good surge of speed (not good at Junctions / Roundabouts)
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (if fitted) is gentler on the brakes when vehicles get within radar distance limit
  • Climate Control is set to Eco mode - Fans don't work on full blast and it cuts out earlier when you are at lower speeds
  • Dynamic Cornering lighting (cornering Fogs and bending Xenons) don't turn at all - I thought mine were broken because of this - but switching back to "Normal" fixed it

There isn't much else I've noticed so far.

I have noticed a 5-ish MPG increase when using ECO mode.  Still annoying that the Drive mode for the DSG doesn't stick though when you turn the ignition off...!

Hope that helps a bit

The only advantage I can see is the gentler braking when using the ACC. Having spent 30k on a car I prefer to use the performance at its best.  Is it really worthwhile to save a few pennies on fuel?, having just paid out a huge chunk of change to buy the car in the first place.

Just my opinion though.

Agree with you on using the performance but will stay in ECO until her KAROQ gets a stage 1 re-map in September at about 8,000 miles which will result in about 185 BHP released and will be permanently in the SPORT setting. Probably be the first re-mapped Karoq in the UK.

I dont use it for penny pinching per-se but it changes your driving style.

On longer trips, savings on Fuel can be useful - means I don't have to stop at Motorway Services and pay stupid high prices :)

Sport does get used occasionally though for the fun of it! :)

Thanks HWR1983, that helped a lot.

Have you already looked in to it? As in quotes etc?

Will have to make a thread on that for progress and results :)

Costs £500 but they do interest free over 12 months, so 10% deposit of £50 then balance of approx.£37.50 per month so very affordable. There are cheaper places but these guys build the Audi's you see racing in BTCC on ITV 4 on sundays throughout the summer. They are also preparing BTCC MG's this year previously run by Triple Eight Racing who used to prepare Vauxhall's entries.

It is an important decision to remap a vehicle you own voiding the manufactures warranty on the engine / gearbox possibly / probably with non factory approved engine management.

Even a bigger decision doing it on a car someone else owns if leased / financed.

Especially on the not yet really tried and test 1.5 TSI  ACT engines giving the experiences of many with the other TSI's.

We all have one chance on this planet of ours, might as well have some fun before we end up as a big pile of carbon!

You might as well, fill your boots, and if it goes t!t's up its only money, 4-£5,000.  Just do not bother trying Warranty Claims,. but some do and get away with claiming on Turbo's etc, after all VW know there are issues with some, standard map or remapped.

Leicestershire Police have been running re-mapped Black VRS motorway patrol vehicles for years and I know they service them in-house but fairly sure they wouldn't tinker with them if they were going to have reliability issues. Also Mercedes AMG offer a 4.0 litre V8 with anything from 503 to 604 BHP depending on how big your wallet is!

Thousand remap vehicles every year, hence all the remappers in business.  Not an issue, all good stuff,  well most are,

REVO put out some sh!te with the 1.4 TSI / TFSI 132-136kw Twinchargers to stage 1 or 2..

New VW Group engines, or ones in the first years of production,  'simply clever',  think twice because they source & use crap parts sometimes,

fundamental design, manufacturing, materials and software, and consumables.

Ask owners that have had the dodgy 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 & 2.0 TSI's,. Euro 4, Euro 5 & now even Euro 6.

Then the DSG ongoing issues with DQ200's.  from 2009-2012, then those 2013-2015,  andf now the latest failures.

Vorsprung Durch Technik,   sometimes a remap is better than the standard map, but remember that Manufacturers warranty.

Last 2 Skoda's we owned completely standard 1.2Tsi manual Spaceback and 1.4Tsi manual ACT Superb covered 28,000 and 16,000 miles totally reliable, oil, tyres checked monthly and serviced on the dot. That's why I buy Skoda's with confidence as do most European taxi drivers (Octavia or Superb) that I have seen on my many holidays that seem to have replaced old Mercs which were better built and more reliable than modern versions hence the switch by drivers who cover many more miles than the average motorist. Nice to see I am keeping you busy.

Have you had it done yet? i'm keen to do it once there is evidence that the 1.5 isn't made of chocolate.....

Wow that quote was a long time ago. Simple answer is no. Had the software update 3 months ago and car is much better to drive now as a result and now passed 21,800 miles. Might get the stage 1 map done in the next 6 months but it will probably need 4 new tyres first and they ain't cheap (Skoda want £880 for 4 which ain't gonna happen) but I do like the standard Michelin Primacy's and will probably replace them with the same compound or latest version.:D
