OMG Thank you! I was worried I would have to have the CD changer installed! Is it easy to fit? I'm a bit of a novice at these things.

Also, I notice it hooked into a SatNav unit, I have seen these things advertised for sale, are they easy to fit & worth it?

Bear in mind that as it's a dension Ice>Link that you need to have the ipod mounted on display to use it properly on the skoda stereos. The standard head units don't display tag info and you need to set up playlists etc on your ipod to use it properly.

I bought a dension Ice>Link Plus and it comes with a cradle etc.

Very easy to install and use.

I'd recommend going for the Dension branded product with the cradle over the oem branded items. It's only

Playlists I can do, no problem, but I don't use them a lot, so I'm assume it can handle standard 'drill downs' to album, artist etc etc, directly entered from the iPod too?

Yeah, if you just choose to use the ipod user interface (as I did) after installing the Dension kit then you can still use the artists/albums/etc. lists, it's just easier when on the road if you have playlists set up. Had to make over 600 playlists on my ipod - not a nice task!

Seriously though, if you buy the skoda/vw kit I think it would be a waste of money, as without a cradle it'll be a nightmare to use!

Sweet bought the Dension just now...need a cradle or it'll be as dangerous as using a mobile!

Anything I should be aware of when fitting? Wanna make sure I don't damage anything as it's fitted, or would halfords fit it if I didn't buy it from them?

Cool, good choice!

Fitting is generally very easy, take the head unit out - I just used a junior hacksaw blade snapped in half and put one piece in each slot on the stereo, I also removed a couple of buttons above, and the small panels either side of the stereo to ease removal. Once out, I also removed the tray below the stereo so I could get my hands in there more easily.

I mounted the cradle on the left hand blanking panel that was removed from next to the stereo (the panel that sometimes houses a cup holder (if fitted)). I basically did this as official dashmounts cost about

All fitted & running fine now, thanks for your guide, just one question though:

When I turn the ignition to position 1 the ipod & HU power up & start to play, but stop as I turn on the engine, now this is normal I know.

Thing is the ipod doesn't resume playing after the engine is running & the HU switches back on, I have to press play/pause. Is this normal?

Yeah, I think that's just part of the setup, mine does that too. I'm used to it now so I'm sure you will be too soon! :)

I've considered these ice links too but I just can't get over the fact that they're effectively charging

I've considered these ice links too but I just can't get over the fact that they're effectively charging £100 for a wire!!!

In my previous car' date=' I purchased a headunit with an aux in socket and then ran a lead from the ipod dock's lineout to the stereo's line in and had crystal sound.

Yeh, I had to use the ipod buttons to control it but then the ice link doesn't offer you full control over the ipod through your head unit anyway.

I think I'd rather get one of the alpine compatible solutions that allow you to stow your ipod away and fully access it through your headunit (there's an alpine headunit and ipod interface on sale at halfords for £199 at the moment I believe).

The only problem with this being that I don't want to change my standard head unit for the sake of it as it looks nice in the car and the sound quality is pretty good.

So ... I guess that's a longwinded way of saying that I'm not going to be using my ipod in the skoda for the time being!:D[/quote']

Hehe, I get what you're saying, but the dension kit does charge your ipod as well as offering limited functionality, so is not just an aux cable that plugs into the stereo. I think it integrates quite well into the car. One thing... wouldn't you prefer to spend £100 to get your ipod into the car rather than £200 for an alpine stereo? Makes no sense to me! :)

BTW - My mate has the alpine stereo in holf mk4 golf hooked up to his ipod. It's quite slow, but I do like the fact he can keep the ipod in the glove box...

i picked up the skoda one last week and its great.

i have installed it with enough cable so i can put the ipod in the centre console when driving so i can reach down and change tracks without looking. but then can be put away in the glove box so no one knows its there.

i dont like having the dock as it advertises the fact you may have somthing worth nicking, hence why i kept the standard stereo.

and with a fiddle with the settings you can fully control normal alubums from the head unit too. but tbh i just control it from the ipod directly.

I have given up with my iTrip as the quality is terrible and gone back to CD's.

What's the sound quality like with these cables?

 I was disappointed with the quality too.

The itrip has a generally poor reputation. It's also technically illegal in the UK apparently - not that that particularly matters.

Has anyone fitted a VAG X1 aux. input to theis standard stereo. I have an MP3 player that isn't an ipod, so just need a cable terminating in a 3.5 mm stereo jack plug, and AFAIK the VAGX1 is the only way to achieve this.

Unless any of you guys know any other thing I can use. Not keen on FM transmitters.

Cheers

Nick

Quality is excellent, on a par with CDs, well, depending on how you encode your mp3s that is, (192VBR is v good), but all in all much better than the headphone socket as it goes through the 'proper' line out in the dock connector.

TBH I had the itrip2 & the dension kit is far superior in every way.

Is it just a cable or is there some electronic trickery involved? I bought an entire car at the weekend for the price of this adaptor...

Is it just me or is there a problem with your fabia-vrs site, Stu?

I've not been able to get on it for a while...
