1.5TSI - Motorway torque

Featured Replies

What are the 0-62 times with 2,3 , 4 or maybe 5 passengers and luggage,  people seem to forget to post those?

Simply clever.

Buy or lease a 150 ps Petrol manual or DSG and you get about 160 ps.

Buy or lease a 150 ps Diesel Manual or DSG and you get about 160 ps and more torque than the petrol 150 ps engine has.

If you want to remap or fit a tuning box then do it.  The UK NSL will still be 60 mph, and if a 150 ps engine can not get you a safe overtake buy / lease a more powerful vehicle.

Road test the cars before you buy or lease them.

The diesel and more powerful petrol engines use the wet clutch DSG, they can take a lot of power.

I'm not sure how robust the dry DQ200 is in the 1.5.

Hopefully it is reliable.

haha, so a local karoq to myself (ashford). I found my 1.5 manual great on the hills, including jubilee way over the  Dover docks. hope you are enjoying your' s as much as I am mine !!!

I have DMd you! I will look out for you now.  These cars are obviously getting too common :D

Torque is not that relevant if both engines give 150hp. Last time I checked torque x rpm = power. What the petrol "lacks" in torque, it makes up in rpms obviously, and driveability and smoother traction characteristics, not to mention a lighter front end compared to the TDI.

To compare engines, you need to look at the full set of variables (torque, rpm, gearing and final drive) - looking at individual parameters separately is not particularly useful.

Out of interest I went onto https://towcar.info/GB/

I think towing a caravan [I do] is a good and fair test of how useful and at what revs a car produces it's torque. I did a comparison on a 1.5tsi manual against a 2L diesel. Each produce 150bhp, but the diesel was 4wd and obviously has a LOT more torque. Against the 1200kg tow I do both basically scored 5 out of 5 for nearly all areas. The only theoretical  advantage of the diesel was it's ability to go up steeper inclines. The petrol whilst producing less torque had the ability to produce it across a far wider rev range in each gear. I was surprised at the results and they seem to confirm what owners of similar caravans to mine have said.

If your van was heavier I expect the results must swing more in favour of the diesel, but for me at least a petrols lower torque should not be a problem. Increased fuel consumption would be a different matter though.

Thanks Colin I am the OP and  I found that interesting even though I do not tow anything. Surprising too as you say.

As I transition from years of diesels to petrol, I just need to use more "revs' to make up for the loss of torque.

Has anybody used the paddles to change gear on the Edition 1.5TSI DSG? You can use then to change down if the auto function is trying to keep you in a higher gear, or vice versa. I have only played about a little with the paddles so far, but they are quite positive and give you an extra option to the drive and sport modes on the DSG box. I never really got to grips with the manual over-ride on the older DSG box, but the paddles are a lot easier.

Yes I had a little extended "play" with the paddles this afternoon. They work very well.

Re the paddle shifters vs the gearshifter used on the DSG.

If the man from Delmonte that lives in the ECU says no to a shift he does not care if the request came via the paddles or the gear shifter.

Paddleshift is gold. Often use it on my mondeo. Hopefully it will be as good in the kodiaq.

Regarding chipping a car with 1.4/1.5tsi  and dq200 gearbox, i would definetly not do it. At least not while it still has warranty.

Afaik all vagcars with more than 250nm uses dq500 or dq380/381. (when it is dsg7) They can handle way more, so you cant compare them with dq200.
