Android auto and Columbus

Featured Replies

Got my first Skoda and loving it, I recently changed from iPhone to android, mainly to use google maps or Waze, have found android auto to be almost useless in comparison to CarPlay. Ie no keyboard when in motion and when I hit the mike button to give voice instructions I get the message internet connection not stable hence cannot change route and mrs can not operate keyboard for me..

i am not wanting to open the great iPhone android debate, have used iPhones for years and become frustrated with lack of battery and memory, hence the change to android.

Ant helpful suggestwelcome as I am hoping it is my inexperience with android that’s causing the problem and not the system, android version is Oreo, phone is Huawei p20

Fairly simple I think. A quick Google of "Huawei p20 android auto compatible" reveals that perhaps the phone isn't compatible with Android Auto.

Bl**dy hell, thanks rustynuts, only had it since Tuesday, will be going back to Carphone Warehouse for a change of phone really didn’t think it would be down to the phone, but as I prove daily, what do I know lol

Could I recommend the Google Pixel 2...

I have a Samsung Galaxy J5 issued by work and it works great on Android Auto. Also works fine with Skoda OneApp and OBDEleven. Not sure how much it costs but I can recommend it. Cost me nowt and calls/data are free too so not bothered if it isn't the best or latest.

Waze can be set to use higher resolution than standard and displays really well on the Columbus. I can't remember how I did it but there is something in the app you can fiddle with. Somebody on this forum posted a how to guide.

I had a J5 last year, nice cheap phone which does all I want. This year I got myself an A5 which has a few more features. Both of which are knocked into the weeds by the wifes Pixel 2.

I have just got my superb and tried my Huawei P10 lite, but it has very basic functions.. basic mapping but no maps at all. maps doesn't even have an option for satellite imagery .  I have tried two cable but still nothing else appearing.  I tried my phone with a Peugeot 2008 hire car a few weeks back and it was great.. is it just a skoda compatibility issue?

hello all,

I just had an Octavia ( produced in 2015) yesterday with a Columbus unit inside. So far I have tried to connect 2 phones:

- Samsung A5 2017: connects correctly, but Android Auto doe snot work.

- Samsung S8: cannot connect at all

My aim is to use waze.

Is there a good guide/manual for the first steps?

MAybe first I should do some fw upgrade to Columbus?

Thx for any advice/links,

Does your unit actually have Android Auto? 2015 was the changeover year, early 2015 didn't have AA but late 2015 did. If you don't have AA then a software update won't magically make it appear, it's hardware related.

Also, Android Auto is purely by cable connection, and doesn't work via Bluetooth.

Yes I think it supports. The car is from June 2015. From menu I am able to select Android Auto. I use cable.

When trying to start it, I see a blink on handset display, and then Columbus shows: Check your phone or connection settings!

And then the connection tries to restart...and  the same happens again and again.

Have you installed Android Auto on your device?  It only tries to install once it's connected to the car, and you will need a 4G signal, as the download is quite hefty.  I had a similar issue on my wife's Galaxy S7 Edge, but doing it on the driveway, connected to wi-fi the first time worked a treat :)

Try another cable and test it first by making sure it gives you a data connection on a computer and not just charging. Remove any MirrorLink apps and make sure android auto is set to add cars…

Menu > Settings > Connected Cars > Add new cars to Android Auto

…and enable all permissions for the app.

Ah, so I need to install app on the phone in advance?

Which exactly? When I search for Android Auto on google play I cannot find app with this exact name.

Ah not! I did not know anything is to be installed on the phone. And already asked to Alan_P which app exactly is needed, as I cannot find exactly Android Auto on google play.

If it’s not coming up on the Play Store (on your mobile) then it’s not officially supported on your device for some reason. Maybe recent builds have dropped support for the Samsung A5?

Your S8 should also be fully supported, but you can always sideload the app:

https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/android-auto/android-auto-3-4-5825-release/

Your A5 will be arm-v7a and the S8 will take either variant. There are thousands of YouTube videos detailing the process… just search for “sideload app android” and also “setup android auto”. I see a lot of people suggesting Samsung phones are very fussy about the USB cable used too.

I'm on a Samsung A5 - 2017

There are also regional variances and licencing issues though… especially if you’re using a phone from another country. Also depends on payment address and display language etc. It’s just the Play Store availability that’s affected though… it should still sideload if the app is supported by the device.

Really thanks to all for all help!!! It was really not difficult at the end, just I simply missed the fact that the app is needed...

Hi guys. I have a 65 plate MK3. Using a OnePlus 5. When I plug phone in, I don't get any Android Auto connection. The phone connects via Bluetooth without problem.

Any suggestions?

Have a look at this link. Input the date range your vehicle was manufactured in, choose the infotainment unit fitted and then choose the model of your phone.

Ha ha....funnily enough it was all down to the cable!! Whilst I was using a good quality cable, it wasn't the original. Once I used the original, it worked. Pity I have to keep plugging it in and keep the bright red cable visible. A hidden usb socket would have been perfect.

On another note....I have a 65 L&K Superb and the manual suggests there should be another usb slot at the rear next to the rear cigarette socket. Can't seem to find mine! Just the one USB in mine by the looks of it?
