Which phone for full Columbus interaction?

Featured Replies

So this maybe belongs in the ICE section, but I have a Superb so putting it here, please move it if appropriate.

I have a 2018 Superb with Columbus, but my current Sony Xperia Z1 Compact doesn't seem to get on with mirrorlink or Android Auto. When I connect via USB nothing happens, and in the compatibility list on the Skoda site it has a X against mirror link for that phone.

So my Question. As I'm about ready for a new phone anyway, and would like to have the Columbus interaction (mainly Waze and Spotify) what phone should I look at to get it all going smoothly?

I have no real affiliation to either Android or IOS, but as I've been an Android user for so long everything is linked (Google, Chrome etc) to Android. Looking on the Skoda list, there doesn't seem to be any phone that has a full set of ticks and no X's.

TIA

Just a thought but is the usb cable of suitable 'quality' to enable AA as not all of them are?

As for Mirrorlink - well I can't help there as even my Pixel 2 doesn't get support! :worried:

It's a Sony cable that came with my phone, but I have loads so will try another one just in case.

If you want to use Waze big screen you can only do it on Android as Apple doesn’t allow it using CarPlay.

My wife’s Galaxy S7 Edge works well with AA so I would guess the more recent ones would also.

You don’t need MirrorLink AND Android Auto...basically AA overrides mirrorlink (mirrorlink is old tech)

I wouldn’t just go on Skoda’s compatibility list as they might not keep it 100% up to date

Ah, thanks for that clarification, I was getting a little mixed up with what I needed.

As for the phone list, you're right. That's why I thought it best to see who has what working now rather than base it on that compatibility list.

Avoid heuwei p20, I had for 2weeks and did not work well with android auto, I’m going back to iPhone, purely because it just worked out of the tin, this not to say android phones won’t, I would just be cautious and try them first or have someone on here recommend. I believed the phone salesman and almost had to threaten ombudsman intervention to get the to swap it for another iPhone

As a former Android user who moved to iPhone a year or two ago, don't be too worried about being deep in the Google ecosystem. I still am and it all functions perfectly well on an iPhone. I prefer Carplay to AA, although as someone else has rightly pointed out it won't let you use anything other than Apple Maps for navigation. I find it fine now that I'm more used to it.

It's mainly the fragmentation and uncertainty around what will work and what won't between Android versions and handsets that forced me to move to iPhone. I'm no fanboy of either, and certainly not interested in debating which is 'better' just flagging up that moving over probably wouldn't be as jarring as you might think.

i've been using HTC android phones with mine.  android auto or mirrorlink both work well without any issues.

though i much prefer android auto.

Right. So swapping USB cables has resolved the problem, and I can get Waze and Spotify on the main screen now.

The "look" is a bit low res though. I seem to recall seeing something somewhere about how to up the resolution in the app by doing some convoluted series of screen clicks. Anyone know off hand the process? does it work for both Spotify and Waze?

Have a look here to see if your problem is completely solved.

It does allow increased resolution for Waze but can't remember what Spotify was like 'pre-upgrade'.

Thanks, that's the post I'd seen before

I've set it to 720 and will report back on the outcome.
