What would owners replace their superb with?

I'd love to do more training. Unfortunately there is no other courses available to improve my driving skills further.

I'd love to be as insightful as you, maybe that would help.

Well clearly you are a driving God and can cope with huge amounts of power in difficult situations. Perhaps you should take up motorsport, maybe I can help you there, got a cupboard full of trophys won between 1989 and 2002. That sorts out the wheat from the chaff. Talk does not win races.

  • I've seen a few mentions of plastics and materials in this thread. I know the motoring press thinks that the score they give to a car is directly linked to the softness of the plastic stuck on the das

  • I have an annual pass at Chester Zoo and live 5 mins away. The chimps are very poorly trained.  I recently saw one of them put the milk into his cup first during a tea party.

  • It's not fair is right! I've never had a ride on the back seat of my car, but the other day had to ride 75 miles on the back seat of a one-series BMW, talk about claustrophobia...

You took the words right out of my mouth. When the flag drops, the bull s&#t stops. Winners are grinners, second is the first looser!!!

@skidpan, have you been tested... are you on the spectrum?

For a lot of people this is (quite rightly) a very personal question so absolutely no need for a response… I’m just being nosy and recognize I might have made a mistake with the troll comment

Who's talking about driving on a track?

I'm pleased for you and your trophies!!

As for me, no, I'm no driving god, I'm just highly trained and good at my job.

So are the Chimps at Chester Zoo.

Ohh, I seem to have stumbled across the primary school playground.

And here was me thinking this was about alternatives to a superb

But that's the way you are supposed to do it. Stops the hot tea cracking the expensive china.

Alan_p is clearly right on the money with his earlier question.

It's cheap china that cracks. We have nothing but the best in Chester.

Of course a cheap mug from poundland would get them the drink of tea they are after. An expensive cup would just be a waste of money. Funny how not everything that primates do is entirely rational....

So, 6 pages later, have we yet determined a decent alternative to the Superb for the same money!?

I've been keen to try something else for years, but there simply isn't much out there that ticks most of the boxes like Skoda is able to.

It's not as clean cut as it used to be, Skoda isn't half as cheap as it once was when I bought my first, but it's still enough to make it difficult to change brands, when value for money is one of the top requirements.

Thank God - back to the actual question. As l said, at the moment there is little or nothing on the market to tempt me away. What would change that is if a challenger brand came up with a comparable car at a 15+% discount to the Superb. Exactly like Skoda did to the Audi, BMW and Jaguar models I used to drive.

I don't remember "same money" being part of the equation. However, maybe one of the new Kia offerings. Optima? I like the Stinger as a Sportline alternative. I'll be curious to see what's out there in 18 months time...

I test drove an Optima. Styling was nice enough but the interior was nowhere near as nice/solid as the Superb.

This is the weird thing, isn’t it? I’m sure that as an ownership proposition a Kia is brilliant. But they look to me sterile and derivative and leave me cold.

I’d almost certainly go used Merc/BMW/Audi if I wasn’t buying Skoda. Honestly don’t see the point in a VW when what I’ve already got is 75% Passat.

I tried Optima and Stinger v6 on Saturday. Stinger way better than Optima but then again it is 10k more expensive. Optima is good though for the money you pay, fully loaded top of the range estate GT trim is 29k whereas a Skoda with the same equipment would be way over 30k. The only let down is the 1.7l diesel as the only choice in the Optima. But facelift with more engines is coming in Q3. Will revisit.

The Stinger on the other hand is a beast. Truly something else. V6 380bhp all wheel drive. It is seriously fast

Not sure if that was for me @freelunch but money (same, less or more) is always a part of the process for me - though I fully accept it will be different for others. By way of example, I'd owned or driven as a company car an A6, S type, 520d and 320d between 1997 and 2013. In 2013 I drove a SII Superb for the first time. I found it comparable to all of the others (better ride quality than the BMW though not as well put together, better fuel efficiency than the A6 though less stylish etc) but overall at least as good and significantly cheaper to own and run. So I joined the Skoda ranks. To be persuaded to leave I'd need to find a significantly better car for the same money as the Superb (haven't found one yet) or a comparable car which is significantly cheaper. The latter seems more likely as Skoda continue to cement their position in the mainstream. Optima is perhaps a decent shout, though they would need to produce an L&K equivalent with a decent engine for me to be interested. Interestingly I've spent a bit of time in the back of new E Class Mercs recently (we have posh taxis round 'ere:)) and it's a nice place to be. But it isn't £20k nicer than my own back seat. IMHO of course:).

@BriskodaJeff  You're preaching to the converted. I own a Škoda, it's not a company car. And, it was not at the top of my list when I went shopping, but it was on the list.

We never got close to driving the Optima. Having had a Kia before the Optima appealed but there were too many problems. To get a petrol meant buying the 2.0 Turbo with an auto box, we wanted neither. To get 5 doors meant buying the estate, a big hatch is fine for us. At full retail prices the Optima was about £8000 more than the 1.4 TSi 150 Superb but we got £3000 off the Skoda and 0% finance, there was no discounts being offered on the Optima or finance deals. Anyone spending £11000 extra to get the Optima would have to be totally mad.

The only thing ATM that I would want to change too is a Merc AMG E53, but that's a long way from the Superb in terms of price.

So unless there is something else out in 2 or so years time I will likely stick with my current Suberb.

Via CarWow I've just purchased a new 220 tsi se-l estate with a few extras inc. metallic for just over £24600 all in. The same spec in the base 220d merc e-class was coming in around £34500. I don't think there's anything out there that can touch the superb I've just bought, for similar cash.

agreed, it's impossible to beat the value for money (including deals) that the Superb gives.

I'm looking for a while now and haven't found anything yet.

I've just specced a L&K Superb 220TSI on CarWow with a few options (paddles, extra USB, sunroof, sunblind etc) 34.5K and I am getting offers for 27k already (22% off)

Just replaced my Passat and was very tempted to buy the same car as my wife, 2016 Superb 1.4tsi SE as it really is a fantastic car.

Instead of a 2017 low mileage SE, I bought a 2014 BMW 518d.

The Superb is more spacious and the petrol engine is far quieter and refined under load, the diesel rattle is taking some getting used to, although the BMW is quieter when cruising. Fuel economy is the same for both, 6.2l/100.

The BMW feels like a heavier, bigger car despite the physical dimensions being very close. Superb feels more nimble and the steering more direct. Where the BMW wins hands down is the interior, you can see and feel the extra expense everywhere. I actually rated the Superb highly for its interior, but it pales beside the BMW. You also feel like you sit 'in' the car, where the Superb, like a lot of VAG cars, you feel like you are sitting 'on' the car.

When parked side by side the BMW looks sculpted by humans where the Superb with its sharp edges looks very much like it was engineered by computer. Subjective of course.

It speaks volumes that the Superb can be compared to the 5 series.  As an aside my wife prefers her car to the BMW.

But you get what you pay for. A new BMW 520SE starts at just around 37K. I would be gutted if it weren't 'better' than a much cheaper Skoda.

Hence what I said about it speaking volumes for the Superb.
