What would owners replace their superb with?

Featured Replies

Some issues will be tough to solve for people who live in flats instead of houses. In my underground garage there are only two sockets for 12 cars and none of them has enough output to charge the electrical vehicle. Moreover, neighbours would not agree to charge a car there because electricity cost is shared and energy provider dont want to install separate unit to measure usage there.

Poland is weird really :)

  • I've seen a few mentions of plastics and materials in this thread. I know the motoring press thinks that the score they give to a car is directly linked to the softness of the plastic stuck on the das

  • I have an annual pass at Chester Zoo and live 5 mins away. The chimps are very poorly trained.  I recently saw one of them put the milk into his cup first during a tea party.

  • It's not fair is right! I've never had a ride on the back seat of my car, but the other day had to ride 75 miles on the back seat of a one-series BMW, talk about claustrophobia...

Reminded that my neighbour has the 187bhp BMW 2.0litre diesel everytime he starts up his 2014 420D which rattles more than a baby's toy.

His 2014 420d will be the old 184ps engine, the 190ps unit is MUCH smoother.

Must admit I've been impressed with a friends new model Audi A4 - it'll be at the end of its 24 month lease soon. Might see how much it'll goes for as I know its history. I like the N/S orientation of the engine on these - reminds me of my previous mkI Superb.

The A4 is shorter than my Superb (by 135mm)  but long term (as I retire) I need the impossible - a more "compact" car that fits my large and tall frame but mrs bigjohn also likes driving (she likes being a passenger in mine but finds it too big to drive).  A mixture of my age, highly bolstered seats and thicker B posts mounted further forward (can only presume this helps accident protection?) seems to be conspiring against me with many cars. This is why I've also being looking at the Karoq - a newer version of the Yeti would have been ideal.

For me, it will probably be the Kodiaq next. I need the boot space of the Superb, but with some ground clearance and low to moderate off road ability, so it seems like a good fit. Having got used to some of the gizmos the Superb provides at a reasonable price I'm struggling to find anything else that isn't eye wateringly expensive once specced up to similar levels....

Interesting. I looked and drove at a petrol A4 prior to buying the Superb. I found it disappointing. Bland interior and such generic Audi styling. The Superb also rides better and is more comfortable. Looking back I can't think of one area where the A4 eclipses the Superb. It is smaller though. 😀

I suppose it is personal choice - I think the current model A4 (not previous) has an interesting interior whereas the Superb is OK but a bit generic. I thought the ride was reasonable (way better than previous A4) especially over poor road surfaces.  However I'm not totally sure its small enough for mrs bigjohn. One thing that has put me off a bit is the tyres are nearly twice the price of my current car and they look as though they will be pretty worn at 16,000 miles - with my current Superb I'm getting about 35,000 miles out of a set!

Over the years the thing I've liked about the Superb is the bigger drivers door. On many cars my elbow ends up in the B pillar and turning right I just about end up looking out of the back window. It's progress - I struggle a bit with the latest Octavia (it's a bit borderline for me) but strangely I'm fine with our old mkI version.

Now I don't have to carry kids in the back (empty nest now) I might have to consider a 3dr version of something - although this is becoming an endangered species as well! I've also been wondering about a new Golf.

Having bought a Karoq SEL in January 2018 and now covered 15,500 miles I am 1.85m tall and there is loads of space inside the car having previously owned Mk1,2,3 Superbs to compare to. Very comfy and quiet if you go for the 1.5Tsi engine, very good car for retirement.

I'm not replacing mine.... Seems daft when it does everything I want, has only done 22k and is now saving me £300 + a month 🙂

Yup - I quite liked the Karoq and indeed I test drove a 1.5 SEL. A few things held me back :-

  • The engine was somehow hesitant compared to my Superb 1.4 - Wasn't sure whether it was because it only had a few 100 miles on it, had poor petrol in it ( I usually use Tesco Greenenergy 99 RON) or was it the kangaroo issue?
  • It wasn't quite as refined as my Superb - not far off though
  • The price, for now (I'm in Yorkshire)
  •  Those tables behind the front seats - don't think my 6ft 5" son would fit in the back (er - that's less of an issue now - flown the nest!). I am aware there are some verions now that down have them!

I'll wait to see what the Kamiq is like first when introduced but if the drivers layout is anything like the Fabia them I'm stuffed. With this everything is in the wrong spot for me (Elbow in B pillar, knee hits wrong part of drivers door, foot too big to get to the clutch footrest etc..) - The Karoq was fine re these issues.

I’ll probably keep my 280 a year but after that I’m liking the look of a year old V90 T8 , if I can scrabble the cash together.

Will be starting to think about this later on in the year and still inclined towards the Superb.  Despite having had three (and several Octavias before) and looking for a change, there is nothing out there as a viable option.  Camry is closest (too bland though) but I do huge motorway mileage and hybrid doesn't suit yet.  Mondeo/Passat is a step back IMO as I place the Superb in a slightly higher class.  Second hand A6/E Class is an option but less warranty, higher running costs and probably more money for a year old one of those compared to a new Superb.  Facelift Superb is not hugely different (apart from the hideous lettering on the rear) but that's no bad thing so will certainly be taking a look anyway...

Only a recent Superb owner but would go back to an Ford Mondeo Estate if I could afford it the Vignale..

Gorgeous motor

Yes it is.  Lovely interior and even though they're not as good as they once were, still a nice drive and better than anything in the VW group.  IMO only the Mazda 6 is nicer to drive.

BUT...I find the latest Mondeo engine range a little dull.

I'm seriously considering BMW 5 series 2017+. I really love the interior design. The only truly worrysome thing is the issues and repairs... I do love their automatic, led headlights and noise insulation compared to superb... Also 5 series rear passangers space sux a bit.

I went from my Superb (2016 SE-L Exec) to a Volvo V90 Inscription. 2 litre diesel, 190 BHP and 8 speed auto. Absolutely flies but VERY comfortable to drive, and much more refined and well put together. Installing my dash cam yesterday was a lot harder as it just didn't want to come apart. Can't really complain at that...

On Skoda I have warranty and my issues were not solved in 2 years 😃

  • 8 months later...

Old thread revival but still relevant imo

Can't believe its nearly 3 years since I got my Superb MY18 190TDI SPORTLINE and its nearing decision time for a replacement. Best car I ever had (I have had a few) and the first time I would consider buying the same again but that is not possible atm. In Ireland we only get the 1.5TSi, iV, 1.6 TDi and 2.0 Tdi (150 bhp), so no 190 Tdi or TSi or 272, I believe this is due to a change in our tax system which now charges on percentage NOx (also on secondhand imports). Skoda not the only make to be dropping the larger output engines so choice is very limited, Stinger no longer available either for example.

The Octavia and possibly the new Leon (released today I think) may offer some alternative but I would miss the size of the superb, boot in octavia is quite close to Superb but not rear passenger room. New Octavia is set to come with a 200bhp TDi which supposedly has 80% less NOx due to its dual CAT setup iirc. If they brought this engine to the Superb it would solve it but I think that is rather unlikely. BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi are stupid prices here and finance options are ****.

Ireland specific problem?
