Android Auto / Smartlink is driving me nuts!

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Long time lurker here but mainly from my Fabia mk1 I just sold on. Any problem I had or technical info I needed for issues or servicing I always found here.

I traded up on the fabia last week to an 67 plate FL scout and I love it, things have come a long way since the 04 Fabia. However that's part of the problem, Android Auto is a feature I could really use  but for love nor money I can not get it to work! I have tried 3 phones and about 6 cables and non of them work, always with the same error.

Android Auto encountered an error. Communication error 8 - Your car's software didn't pass Android Auto security checks. Make sure that the car's date and time are set correctly, and that Google Play services has been updated.

Now the way this is driving me crazy and the fact its my phone and my car connected by a physical cable I don't understand why such intrusive security is required! Any way I need some tips before I try any more.

3 phones and 6 cables make me think the car must be at fault, I must have changed the time and data and DST and time zone 50 times. IT IS CORRECT.. the only strange thing is that if I select GPS time the date changes to 18/01/2038????? is this messing something up? but when I set it manually this should not be a problem.

My other question is if I reset everything back to factory settings will I lose smartlink? Was it standard or needed to be unlocked on a FL with Amundsen?

It there a different time and date setting somewhere in the Octavia? I have tried through settings, and vehicle settings and from the dash they all seem to be the same.

Please help me!

Alex

Also mirror link seems to work but I cant see any use for it?

I set the date correctly but it still does not work working. I feel like the gps date reverting to 2038 may be part of the problem but I don't understand why. Is there more than one place to set the date?

Thanks for going to the effort to help.

Lots of interesting things in that link and it does seem to be a common VAG problem but the time and date as it displays on the settings > time and date page of infotainment when set to manual is definitely correct. Time zone set to GMT then DST ticked, I have tried setting to GMT+1 as well with no DST.

I tried using it (Android Auto) for the first time today and what a pile of manure it is. I've uninstalled it, it looks amateurish and like a 5 or 6 year old designed it.

What do you need it for TBQH, if you have bluetooth it should pair automatically with the car so you don't need it.

Try resetting it to factory settings. You won’t lose the SmartLink by resetting it. Try to reset the time and date, I cannot fathom the GPS having the date wrong, that is very odd! I’ve never had an issue with my SmartLink even if the clock is set manually.

Once you get used to it you appreciate the simplicity, I thought the same last week

Something does need checking out if the date keeps getting reset to 2038. I've been using android auto every journey for 3 years and I think it's brilliant; Google maps is good with traffic updates, Spotify, acast, audible, iPlayer radio work fine and the ability to use voice commands/voice for maps/voice for text messages/WhatsApp is mostly good. Wouldn't have a car without it now!

This is just making me want it even more. If we are sure that a full factory reset isnt going to mess anything up then I will try that tomorrow.

odd, I use it in my octavia without problem and my wife loves it in her golf. Access to pocketcasts, spotify and google maps are must haves for me. Without android auto you've got to pull over and check the phone, much much better having it on the head unit and voice controlled.

My phone (G8+) is in a holster on the windscreen, with a power cable attached, linked via BT to the car, no need for any further intervention as I've set it up to do voice interaction.

I thought I'd trial it and from the start I think it's utter cr4p. Why use Google Maps? I've got the car sat nav, plus a trusty Garmin for Speed Cams (tried installing them on the car's sat nav and given up). The graphics are something childish and look like something out of the 1970s or early 80's and used in primary schools. It needs a very radical update/overhaul before I'd even consider giving it another trial.

OK so I factory reset everything, restarted the unit and went through the setup including setting the date and time.

All to no avail, I still get the exact same message!

Argh! I'm going to have to take it to the dealer when I get chance but I don't think they are the brains of Britain and likely to tell me its the cable but I have tried at least 6 of them???

Can you run the Android Auto app on your phone, not connected to the car

Yes it runs fine an the phone (LG G6), only brings up the error when trying to connect to the head unit. I still get the odd GPS Date 19/01/2038 today it seems?

Maybe you're going through a wormhole in the space time continuum. If so can you tell me the next lot of winning lottery numbers.;)

So the date  by GPS has today moved on to 20/01/2038 so by all accounts my car should have self destructed..... but it hasn't and Android Auto still doesn't work.

I had the clever idea of changing my old phone to the gps date and time shown to see if that would work, but it turns out you can't go past 2037 on android. Still stumped.

the LG G6 seems very hit or miss with the Skoda head unit. I cannot get it to work with mine, though it works fine with the pioneer head unit in my VW transporter.

If you're looking at the graphics you're kind of missing the point. It is designed to be minimalist and easy to use so you look at the road not the screen. As for Google maps v in built nav, Google is updated constantly and displays traffic information. According to my in-built skoda sat nav this

doesn't exist and when I drive over it I should be getting very wet. It opened last year but the amundsen unit still knows nothing about it. If it is ignorant about major changes like that how many minor errors does it contain?

Have you tried switching the time/date source from GPS to Manual ? Mine is set to manual and works fine

Yes I have set it manually to the correct date but it still doesn't work. I am wondering if the gps date is still stored somewhere and that causes the conflict? I am going to keep it on gps for a few days in the hope it will update but I'm not convinced...

If the GPS date isn’t settling, at risk of asking the obvious, why not take it back to Skoda? As it’s such a new car, it shouldn’t be having this kind of fault IMO.

It's as much an LG problem as it is a skoda one, well documented problems with LG G4 and now G6 connecting to some cars. The messages about time etc I've not seen but I've tried and failed to connect 4 LG phones to my car. I've had no issues connecting several moto phones to the same car with the same cable.

There has been loads of issues with Google play services recently. It may work if you clear the data and cache in Google play services I've had to do this to use bt sport app and some map applications so may be of help.

OK  a little update for everybody in case it helps anybody with the same problem.

I've been too busy with work to get the car back to the dealer. What I had done as I said earlier is leave the date and time set to GPS in the hope it would somehow update its self. I kept checking for the first 2 weeks and then forgot, resigning myself to going to the dealer. Anyway I randomly looked today and the date was correct, I plugged my phone in and surprise surprise AA works just fine.

So to clarify it doesn't matter if you manually set the date, if the GPS is wrong it wont work, the only way to sort it is leave it in GPS time, this may take a very long time to update (weeks).

Hopefully that helps somebody!
