I hate my exhaust chrome tailpipes

Featured Replies

Doing the heat shield fix reminded me I don't like the chrome tailpipes as they seem to have had several fallouts with the ground etc before I got the car last year.

I noticed today they are actually fixed to the exhaust above and below where still in-situ. Perhaps someone even welded the tip onto one pipe to prevent movement.

What are my options to replace them, removing the old seems like I need some heat, grinding type equipment?

dont want to spend a bomb, just getthe chrome look back.

The welds holding the tip are there from the factory: to remove the tips you'd need to grind off the welds. I'm pretty sure you can buy chrome tips that clamp on instead.

If you're wary of doing this yourself, I'd imagine an exhaust fitter could sort it out for you.

How about replacements is ebay my friend? Maybe nicer looking ones could be had for a few quid. Need to make sure they don't rattle as I have a TDI. The odd thing is the current tailpipes  don't finish flush with the bumper they have been cut different, hence finding something to fit or perhaps the new ones can finish flush/horizontal in future.

I'd try cleaning them up first. Try some 0000 grade wire wool and some Autosol metal polish, it works wonders.

Although the pictures maybe some show they are very badly out of shape particularly one of them. Pushed shoved and bent about. At some angles they look poor especially from the back.

If I can fix for next to nothing I am willing to make the effort.

Ahh that's a bummer, I hope you can get them sorted out.

Where did you obtain those. And did you fit yourself to a car without anything from factory ?

They were Ebay purchases, they're not cheap and cheerful ones. They are the bolt on type so no welding required. I am quite pleased with them as they fit the aperture well and they always clean up nicely.
