Honor 9 or Moto G6...?

Featured Replies

So my current phone (Pixel) went bump over the weekend (as in it stopped working...not that I dropped it onto concrete!). So it's gone off for repair which could apparently take up to 2 weeks - and as I need it for work, nav, etc I need to get something to plug the gap (plus I'd be contemplating getting a second device anyway).

I don't want to spend flagship money so was looking ~£250 or so...and it looks like the Moto G6 and the Honor 9 pretty much fit the bill. I was just wondering if anyone had either of these? And if so, what are your impressions?

I've got a Moto G6 - it's a good piece of kit

Having come from 2 LG phones in a row it took a bit of getting used to the differences, though I expect some of them are down to the Newer OS, not just the phone

A fingerprint scanner is new to me, for example.

There's hardly any extra apps on it, which is good, but means

- you don't get a default "music" player. I downloaded Rocket Player - seems simple enough and is Android Auto compatible

- you don't get a default "gallery" but you can just look at "device folders" in the Google Photos app

Sound quality on music seems good to me but I don't have fancy headphones

Still getting used to all the things the camera can do, or where certain things are which I'm used to seeing somewhere else

Got mine sim-free from John Lewis, it came with a soft-gel case in the box which is a bonus, but you don't get any free earphones.

I would have liked the bigger G6 Plus but it's only available in Carphone Warehouse, and I had JL vouchers to spend

Rapid charge works very well

I didn't really consider the Honor 9 - think at the time it was more expensive but didn't seem any "better".

The only other one which took my fancy was the Nokia 7Plus, but that was £100+ more and teh fingerprint scanner is on the back so I wasn't sure if it could be unlocked without picking it up (on my LGs you could tap the screen twice to wake them)

Ever since release in about 2013 the current Moto G always appear in lists of top 5 budget phones across the internet.

I still have a G3, but looking to upgrade soon.

Thanks for the info

Yes, less "extra" apps would be a positive for me too - don't like lots of extraneous guff installed.

How do you find the cam?

Yes, I've heard/read a lot of positive things about them.

Just trying to weigh everything up now!

Some Moto G are quite short on internal memory to keep the cost down. There's normally a big memory option too.

Still getting used to it. I've only had the phone 4 weeks and haven't tried to do any proper pictures yet, it's all been "snaps" with the kids.

I need to have a proper play

one weird thing I found (that i didn't think my other phones had done, but might be wrong) is that pressing on a certain area of the picture* to set the focus point also makes it the main consideration for brightness/AWB so you then have to adjust the levels otherwise other sections of the picture get over/under exposed

*after turning off the "press anywhere on screen to activate shutter" option

Nokia 6?

Not exciting but supposed to be very solid and well build with good battery and nearly a vanilla Android install.

Went with the Honor in the end...very impressed so far. Performance and battery seem very good - it does come with a bit of guff installed but can uninstall as required. EMUI is a bit different but it's actually quite good and I've not encountered anything yet that I can't do or would want to do differently. Certainly in terms of price/specs/performance, it seems to be incredible value - way less than half the price of some of the big boys but very close to them in terms of performance. It's probably not quite as smooth, slick and snappy as the super top end models, but for the most part it's not even noticeable.
