Painful seats

Featured Replies

Drove a superb for an extended test drive today (dealer was great) but walked out after both the journey out and back with pain in the right thigh.

Car was a manual with the electric seats and I think the pain is partly from the right bolster.

Is there any way to fix this? Seat trimmer to change the foam to memory foam or something?

or is it offset pedals as it’s a bad RHD conversion?

The cost of an aftermarket ergo seat makes the car a lot more expensive and I don’t think I could live with the seat for longer journeys.

Test drive a Sportsline Superb.

Sportsline seats are way more comfortable than regular Superb has.

I have a bad back and a dodgy left knee, and my L&K seats are amazing in my opinion. Driven 5 or 6 hour journeys with no trouble at all

The pedal offset is nowhere near as bad as my dad's merc

The base looks identical to the l&k...

Can I ask you what makes you say this?

The car I drove had electrical adjustment, I just found the right bolster quite firm and painful under the leg.

Out of interest, is the DSG accelerator in a different position to the manual gearbox cars?

I'm not entirely sure but I would expect it's in the same place - there is a nice clutch-sized gap between my brake pedal and the foot rest

Thanks.

i don’t quite understand, there are so few cars well set up for driver ergonomics at present.

The base looks similar but they are very different seats.

I'm sure that your dealer has both Sportsline and original Leather seat versions in the showroom. Try to sit in both of them and you feel major difference.

It's the same with all Skoda sport seats. Most comfortable Skoda seats I have ever seen are Kodiak sport seats btw.

You have a disc problem (in your spine not brakes), when you get to see a specialist he will tell you which disc from where you get the pain.

i sat sat in the sport line in the dealer and the seats at least in the showroom feel more supportive on the back, but no different on the base.

when you say different can I ask in what way? I am wondering if the sport line in the U.K. maybe doesn’t get the seats?

From pain on the right thigh where the bolster pushed in? The pain wasn’t in the back, but in my right leg.

Used to have an E class Merc that had this problem, half an hours driving and a pain would develop in my right hip.

Drove 10 hours to the South of France last week in the Superb , just getting out of the car on two fuel stops, and felt as fresh as when I left , not a single ache or pain anywhere.

I had my eye on an L&K, but found the seats very unsupportive (more like a 70s leather armchair) and when the wife tried them she found them very uncomfortable and vetoed getting the car. The sportline seats are much more like seats in a 'normal' car.

Obviously, everyone is a different shape, so what suits one driver may not suit another. Also, check that you are adjusting the seat correctly - I found out that what I've been doing for the last 20 years was wrong :(

Did the seat base have tilt adjustment? I found my L&K leather seat uncomfortable for my legs when I first got it until I adjusted the tilt of the base.

Exactly my thoughts, if your suffering pain you haven’t adjusted the seat properly. Electric seats have more adjustment possibilities than manual so it shouldn’t be difficult to set seat correctly.

I did adjust the tilt, I just have very long legs and that side bolster was pushing into the leg when it was on the accelerator.

Do the sports seats have better padded bolsters at the sides?

Short answer is yes.

Right, off to spec up a sport line/sport plus, to see if it can add some of the options I want, then if so to test drive me.

Why can’t car manufacturers offer choices of seats, like a sporty seat, an ergo sat and a standard seat for the driver? You can choose front seats as an option in some of Europe but not U.K.!

The best seats I've sat in were in a hired Renault Kadjar Nav edition. Just the right shape, cosseting  and extremely comfortable after 3 hrs driving and that's with my and my wife's back problems.

The superb SEL leather seats are just OK, very plain and flat, a bit like a bench seat but with an over complex set of adjustments which I think I'll never get to master.  I suspect they were also designed to accommodate over sized and overweight people. I agree you sit on these seats and not in the seats.

Seating position is the worst compared to Fabia and Octavia. The steering wheel has not enough up adjustment so getting the knees/thighs under when entering is difficult. I can see now the reason for those flat bottom steering wheels!

Both me and my petite wife bang our heads getting into the car...

And my trouser back pocket buttons scrape along the side bolster because the entry is tight.

I am not particularly tall or overweight....

Seats are Subjective by each individuals - I am absolutely comfortable with SE&L Exec seats - 6 ways adjustable - my memory is set and 4-5 hours stretch drive doesn't make me tired on arrival.

Yes, the DSG makes loads of difference - i stretch the legs full to just reach to pedal and recline the seats a little with higher lumber support - End result is happy drive - and if you put it on CC then even better

Happy with mine too, but as with each of my three Superbs only after a month (or more) of tinkering with it. The electric seats offer too many options and a "default" setting from which to start would be a welcome addition.

Try a DSG.

It’s the right leg on the bolster while using the accelerator. Same contact be the bolster on the sport line seats :/

From pain on the right thigh where the bolster pushed in? The pain wasn’t in the back, but in my right leg.

Pressure on a nerve where it leaves the spinal column (usually from a bulged disc) causes pain in the area the nerve services, not where it is being nipped. Have experienced it when i woke up one night with pain in my leg - it wasn't the bed causing it.

Did you get the paid on both legs or only one, if I recall the seat is symmetrical.

Just the right leg and only in the superb. No such trouble in the Octavia.

Quite frustrating as I am certain it’s related to a combination of RHD driving position and that seat.

when you’re sat there, the right leg goes over the bolster to sit on the accelerator.
