I purchased a 2017 Octavia SE estate two months ago and am shocked and disappointed at the high level of road noise in the cabin, on less than perfect roads. My tyres are Michelin Energy Green X 16". Anyone on here have the same problem? Was it resolved by changing the tyres? Can't believe problems like this still exist in 2018.

I've got the same car on the same tyres. No complaints and I have just had my hearing aids turned up to the max.

I've had my Octavia Hatch just over 3 years now and when I first bought it I found the noise levels in the car to be horrendous compared to the Citroen Xantias and C5 I'd been running for about 7-8 years before it ...

 

There's no doubt the road/tyre noise is really quite obtrusive, the ride on 17" alloys was awful to compared to 14 & 15" wheels, and in the first few weeks of ownership I seriously regretted buying the car although I'd no option as my C5 suspension was shot to bits however you do get used to it and now I'd not go back if you paid me ... The reliability alone is worth it...

 

. Not sure how easy or practical it would be to add additional sound proofing to the floors or inner bulkhead and wheel arches to try and reduce it but it might be an option to look into.

It’s not hard to add more soundproofing in the back and I have considered it but I just turn the radio up a bit more. I am used to noisy cars though, both my old C30 and my CLK55 AMG have very audible engines so it is what it is I suppose

OP off to a bad start on Energy tyres - all energy tyres offer less rolling resistance (to improve economy), the downside of course is it's a harder compound which creates more road noise. As per above plenty info in the forum about road noise.

 

Sound proofing - any gains are going to be minute - you can't simply sound proof certain areas, it'd involve removing all seats and carpets. Yes my car is louder than I'd have expected on poor road surfaces (17" Dunlop Sport) but it's nowhere near a deal breaker.

 

I have the Octavia rubber mat in my boot which is quite heavy - perhaps that helps a little with noise (costs less than soundproofing!) but other thing I noticed was during a recent garden upheaval which involved many trips to the rubbish to the tip, and replacing it on the return journey with loads of rubbish from Wickes, I was very happy with the way the car drove. Even with just a few 25kg bags of sand over the rear axle, the suspension was much less 'crashy' - defo improvement.

I completely agree. I’ve a SE business 2016 hatchback. And I find the engine, road  and wind noise very disappointing. I’ve had the car 9 months now and these show a real lack of refinement for a car, that now is quite expensive. I’m stuck with the car for another 3 years so As soon as I’ve got spare time Im trying the sound proof route. Tyres seem a mixed bag, I’ve got Dunlop sport max. Some people say they are quiet, but I wouldn’t agree. Unless road surface is PERFECT, they create a hollow rumble within cabin. I think it’s the tone rather that loudness. Metal echo sound! Hope this makes sense. 

first thing I’m trying is fitting extra D seal around doors. Compared to a lot of cars, Octavia only as single seal. Then I will move on to sound deadening and adsorption. Starting with boot, foot wells, bulkhead, under seats and doors. Lastly engine hood. Fingers crossed this can tame it. 

Strange things I have found, car seems quieter after it’s rained. What this means , I don’t know, maybe the water helps seal ,,,,, seals  I’m not sure.

I have a 2017 vRS TSI and there is a lot of road noise. At the weekend I removed the rear seats, boot side panels and carpet. I then lined the entire floor area and spare wheel well, wheel arches and the area under the rear seat with "Silent-Coat" and then layed 6mm "Super Liner" over this. No noise from the rear now but I still have road noise from the front but the car is much better than before overall.

Interestingly, there was little in the way of sound proofing as standard, hence the problem. It is such a shame as the car is great in every other respect.

How much Silent coat did you need, I'm assuming you went for the 2mm? How much 6mm foam did you use?

 

I ask as I've been looking at getting the 2mm butyl and the 6mm isolator but not sure if the benefits are worth the cost and effort. Your post indicates they definitely are

Great to hear positive result from sound proofing! . How did you find removing seats? Also do you get a lot of external noise from doors? I find the seals poor compared to other cars . Might help noise from front of car

Removing the seats was ok. There is one bolt under a plastic cover where the back rest splits 60/40. The back rests then slide inwards away from each side and can be moved out of the way but kept in the car as I did not want to detach the release cables. The base just lifts up once the isofix covers are removed. There are two clips at the front of the base. 

I'm happy with the results. The trouble is once you think you have a noise problem you concentrate on it more. I thought it was still a bit noisy after the work was done until I took the family out and noticed that, even at speed, we were talking to each other in near whispers with no problem. My 4 year old even commented on how quiet it was in the rear, but I think she was just being kind after all my efforts!!

I purchased 2 boxes of silent coat but have half a box left. I will use this and one more box on my wife's TDI vRS. One roll of 6mm foam (3 sq mtrs) was just right.

It's worth noting that I can,t really hear the engine, there is little wind noise so I do tend to concentrate on the road noise all the more. If you google Golf VII road noise, guess what, same issues.

Yes, it was the 2mm silent coat.

i agree, as soon as you think about it, you do consentrate on the noise more. Thanks for all your advice. I’ll get some on order. I think if I could just at least mumble the sound, the driving experience will be greatly improved. You are lucky about wind and engine noise, I find my quiet noisy. However strangely it can change., some days it’s fine, others it sounds like the door is open. I might check all door seals again .

Why do people have to nit-pic. The product I purchased was Dodo super liner, as recommended buy the seller, and it came in a roll. Hence why I said it came in a roll!

Nit-picking? I think you have misjudged.

 

Wellsy asked if the Super Liner was also Silent Coat which you replied yes to. This is not the case, so if he searches under Silent Coat he isn't going to find it.

 

I clarified the brand and provided a link. I thought I was being helpful...

This weekend's project was to do sound proof the back of the wife's 2014 TDI vRS. 2mm Silent-coat followed by 6mm Super Liner. The result was very good. Strangely, although there was still not much insulation in as standard there was more than in my 2017 FL TSI vRS.  The TDI does have Canton so maybe they added more insulation for sound quality reasons.
