How bad do these rear shocks look?

Featured Replies

I’m not an expert at how bad things are but these look a bit grotty to me (I know one is leaking!)

Leaking = DEAD.

You have to replace them in pairs.

What was the question again?

Well I didn’t think they looked very good! Trying to get a garage to do the work is another matter!

The rears aren't difficult to change at all. Could always give it a go yourself.

 I spent more time sweeping mud and dirt off the driveway after finishing......

If I had all the tools I would attempt it myself, however to get all the tools would probably cost me about as much as it would to pay a garage to do it.

i did get a quote that is reasonable to do the work... however they don’t seem to want to book my car in so suspect the quote was wrong

DIY?

Reminds me, I invested in a neat tool the other day to help with this job (on a mate's Touran, widely applicable). It fits on the top of the shock to counterhold it while you undo/do up the top nut, different size/width at each end:

If I thought I could do it diy I would, but I have a horrid suspicion that I’d attempt to take it apart, it would go wrong/haven’t got the right tools and it would take all day

But that removes the fun of trying to keep a very small adjustable on the flats!

Edit:- I suppose I could buy one of them - and maybe the bent wire things to ease open the lugs on the inlet plastic pipe on the TSIs, hum, maybe.

I never had any issues with keeping an 8" crescent spanner on the flats!

Now you are spoiling my future tool buying plan!

I used to have a genuine Crescent 6" or 8" adjustable that I inherited from my dad, but it has gone AWOL - now all I've got are Bahco for serious stuff and many others for support acts!   I've always glanced at the Crescent branded set of spanners that Costco sell or used to sell, but half of them are AF as that is just stuff brought in from USA, I think that I've handed all my Whitworth and AF spanners over to my mate for when he had an A40 for a few months, still got plenty Whitworth and AF sockets though.
