4x4 rear differential kaput

Featured Replies

Hi, I need a new diff for my Superb, so would appreciate recommendations for breakers, as a new one is £ 2900 +vat!!! Part no OBR 525010B...

However, I reported the noise that the diff is making to my dealer whilst still under warranty, at two different services, and at my new main dealer twice after the warranty had ended. They both claimed nothing was wrong . An independant VAG specialist has now diagnosed it, using a stethoscope. Do you think that I have any comeback with them at all ? Thanks

?

Is the car over 3 years old / 30,000 miles?

 I assume it will be,

so when was the Haldex Services done and by whom, and when you asked when the car was in warranty and under 3 years old were you told about servicing of the Haldex?

?

What has it FULL MAIN DEALER SERVICING while in warranty and after and just not to 'Manufacturers Schedule / Guidelines' because many dealerships do not do that?

I think it will depend on how long between you first reporting it to the dealer and getting it diagnosed. I would take the VAG Specialist's report/notes, along with the dealer's service receipt from the times you brought it up (this is typically written on the receipt) back to the dealer and discuss with the service manager. They may want to inspect the diff themselves. If you have no luck there contact Skoda UK and ask them to investigate.

Good luck and keep us informed.

Matt

You have six years protection against inherent faults. If you can somehow prove inherent.

If you have proof that you asked them to look at it within three year warranty then you still have that protection as they didn't honour the terms of the warranty at that time by fixing it.

This of course is all somewhat moot because whilst true, unless skoda uk agree you will have to get legal to enforce it and that could easily cost more.

^^^ If Servicing & Maintenance carried out to Manufacturers 'Guidelines', that can not be Service Schedule as so many employees at Skoda / VW Group main dealers seem unaware of what Servicing Guidelines are on Haldex, and is it 30,000 miles, or 3 years, & do they have a filter or no filter, gauze or not even aware the cars are part time AWD.

Haldex not even part of Service Plans, or when people pay for Major Servicing in the UK.

An extra like the DSG and Brake Fluid changes that Owners / Drivers might not know about if the 'Trained Professionals' or Desk Jockeys tell them about.

Thanks, it was reported at two different main dealer services within the 3 year period, circa 25000 miles, and at every main dealer thereafter up to about 85000.  They normally blamed the drone on the tyres. I have sourced and fitted a secondhand one, as the car was needed, and it is once again quiet . The haldex oil was changed at about 40000, but when I asked about the filter, they simply said it wasnt on the service schedule. The second hand diff was £550 from an A3 on 51000 miles. I must recommend Fil and his team at AVS Services in Pool, Cornwall, for his diagnostic skills and service, and immaculate workshop. He correctly diagnosed in an hour what Skoda failed to do in 4 years.

I`m not sure that I can be bothered with battling them; it`s not the first time VAG have failed to deliver for me under warranty

Yep, that's why I'll be doing this myself ... :D

Had a noise on my rear diff and took it to a gearbox specialist..they stripped, flushed, shimmed and rebuilt both the Haldex and the diff with new filters and fresh oils.

They had to special order the filter because Skoda have no information on it being fitted, yeah right.

A note to add, the filter was very gunged up and the oil had jellyfied....not nice.

All good now. Cost £650

Mines a 2012..definately has a filter

I'd guess the majority of the expense was labor, not the parts?

Yes, removal and refit and full strip down of diff. Then wash out, sort the gears out check and re check then rebuild/refil...refit...test drive...etc

A lot of work.

- car drives lovely now and prior to this I got the 4 wheels aligned, camber, toe etc.

Mine looks like gen 4...on the web plenty of places sell them...mine looked similar to this https://www.haldexrepairs.co.uk/shop/filters/generation-gen-4-filter-kit-vw-audi-seat-skoda/

I will change mine every 30k.

Good advice....I had the Haldex oil changed at the dealer last year but not the filter I believe.  It is poor if this part is not on the system and not listed as part of the Haldex service.

I only got my haldex oil change done after pointing out it was due, not by actively being reminded it was part of the dealer's service schedule.

I have been looking into the Haldex servicing in a bit of detail due to an error code on my Haldex that popped up last week and was cleared by the dealer.

If its not listed on the dealer system then I would be tempted to buy the filter and oil and get it done elsewhere, or the very least hand the new filter to the dealer and tell them to change it as part of the service, and keep the old one for me to inspect.  Seems pointless having an oil change if the filter is never changed...!  The service should also include dismounting the pump and cleaning the strainer on the end of it to make sure the oil circulates.

Found a useful earlier post talking about the same subject https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/450696-haldex-gen-4-oil-filter-change/?tab=comments#comment-5064154
