Looking at two 2011 Octavia estates tomorrow 1.4 tsi and 1.8 tsi both in elegance spec.

which is the best car?

1.8 has cleaner mot history and has been serviced by main Skoda dealer 1.4 has 20k less miles.

are there problems with either engine? Don’t want a money pit like my old sharan.

Is that the 160 hp 1.8 TSI and the 125 hp 1.4 TSI ??

Well I love my 1.8 TSI, in some ways more than 2 litre TSI in the VRS, revs to 7k rpm and goes like stink, felt more than the 160 hp quoted and had performance figures better than the wiesel VRS and I was still getting mid forties MPG.

Not sure what the 1.4 TSI was like then, know it was also very good with the 7 speed DSG boxes which had just come out with the Fabia VRS and Octy 1.4 and 1.8 TSIs doing cracking mpg, getting in to the 50 mpgs looked entirely possible in the 1.4 TSI.

So quite different performances and I would probably choose the 1.8 TSI from that era but also have a extended warranty to cover any turbo problems.

Loved my 1.8 TSI DSG L&K in the mark 2 Octy, possibly the best of the dozen Skodas I have owned and that includes 4 VRSs.

I’m looking at the 1.8 first (160 bhp) if it looks good and drives well it’s the one as long as they can give me a warranty.

is the turbo a bigger problem than the cam chain tensioner?

I would have thought the turbo is the much more expensive item.  Worth making sure warranty covers cost of turbo replacement which all up and cost a few k!

Is it the 1.8 that can drink oil?

Mine was fine ie the 160 hp TSI in  the mark 2 L&K and the 2 litre 200 hp VRS and the 1.8T before that, that drank a bit, like a Mercedes F1 car, but not horrendously high.  Liked the 1.8 TSI more than the longer stroke and lower revving 2 litre.

.

The only Skoda I had that did that was the 1.4 twin-charge which did drink oil, at odd times, it was rubbish at getting a good oil level measurement and in the end you started to go on the low oil level light on the dash.  Did 100k miles in it, got over 600 miles on a tankful, amazing torque and revs.   Did ever really need an oil change as it had changed itself by buring through almost a litre every 1k miles then it would not burn much for a while, very odd engine but fun.  Same mark 2 Fabia VRS chassis was poor as set up by Skoda ie not lower with better shocks, roll bars etc.

I went for the 1.8 was a Skoda demo car then a single owners since. Very clean with full Skoda service history.

Only 3 month warranty but I’ll look into one myself instead of the one offered by the dealer.

any suggestions for servicing in the Southampton area?

Can't help with servicing but I'm in Eastleigh with Obdeleven Pro if you want it plugged in for anything.

I know independent used to be VW group specialists although they have branched out into all makes now- but still a good hub of expertise there.

Never used them but once visited a pupil there who was on Work Experience (I'm a teacher) and was really impressed with their setup and standards. They've got a Hedge End site now if that's any closer for you.

Nice one. I recently bought a 2011 MKII 1.8tsi wagon (or estate in UK speak). Love it so far. Nimble but solid. Quite surprised at its pace as well. Great car.

My findings too v happy with it. Why did they stop putting the 1.8 tsi in the mk3? Guess the next one will have to be vrs.
