Lowering springs for 280 Sportline 4x4?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Does anyone know if h&r or eibach actually do lowering springs for the 280 4x4 superb? All my reading seems to indicate non 4x4 only. If the standard springs do in fact work OK I'm assuming the drop is not as low as the non Sportline. Do all functions of the car still work OK once lowered?

I've heard the equivalent Passat springs fit as well. Can anyone confirm?

Thanks!

Thanks. Most appear to be for the standard superb which means the drop on sportline will only be 15mm or so I guess.

Sorry, gotta ask: why on earth would you want to lower your Superb, or any car for that matter? It's the most bizarre of modifications with nothing but drawbacks.

I have always wondered that too! I have DCC and it lowered car from default by 15mm and I already have issues hitting curbs with front wheel arch (the plastic bellow it). Its annoying.

Can't imagine getting -15mm on sport. Never less even -15mm for some reason, that's just  crazy low for a car like superb???

its not crazy at all.................

even with 20 inch rims.......

So for the looks? Hmm... I did not buy Superb for the looks but for practicality, travel, mobility, etc... I like both sporty driving and comfort ride. The worst mod in my book is lowering cars bellow certain point. They're just not made for that. Ground clearance on pics is soo low that u would hit any road "policeman"/bump in Maribor/Slovenia.

Idk Im 26 and I feel lowering cars is childs game. Unless youre a race driver driving daily on race tracks. Because that's what low/stiff suspenson is meant for.

One of the most common complaints I hear about the superb is about suspension. To soft, handles like a boat etc. Most of the people I have talked to with DCC always use sport settings on the suspension. So in my opinion good quality lowering springs is not only for the looks. It depends on what ride quality you prefer. Any Audi or BMW is way more stiff in their comfort setting then my Superb in sport :tongueout:

The 15mm difference between the 'standard' Superb and Sportline makes a massive difference in how much the car leans in the corners.  IMHO it doesn't spoil the ride either.   The Sportline spec isn't exactly honed for track day use; it still has a bias towards comfort and that's fine for 99% of the time.  If anything, I'd prefer the Sportline to be a little bit harder, it's got plenty of reservers in the comfort bank.

I'd say some anti roll/sway bars would benefit the Superb more than lowering (or would in the case of the Sportline).   I think with R19's AND excessive suspension lowering, you're risking losing the versatility of the Superb but with R18's and the 'standard' setup, 15-20mm isn't going to slam the car and make it scrub tyres on the arches.

Why buy a S3 if you want an aggressive looking, lowered, pimped ride? Why buy an S3 if you want a 'firm' ride; all the guff tells you it is a comfort cruiser by design.

Most like to 'personalise' their car in some way but I cannot see the attraction in suspension that is simply lowered to the limit, they just look like they have suffered complete suspension failure.

I watched an E class Merc yesterday that had obviously been lowered, pimped with at least 21" wheels with at least 4 shiny exhaust outlets on the rear end. It had to manoeuvre over the hump on the pedestrian crossing like it was going over a ditch!!  Still sounded like a cranky old diesel though

I think such mods are great for concourse or show cars but look silly in everyday use AND ride like a wooden buggy with four pram wheels made by 10 year olds.

Definitely  not for me but then taste is a very personal thing eh?

Do you have personal experience with lowering springs?  Doesn't sound like it from your comment.

I have been using Eibach Pro springs on my previous car.  It's just a little bit firmer, and with less "bouncing". We are not talking about slamming the car to the ground with low cost coilovers here :tongueout:

Not quite sure how you can tell my experience from my post but hey no worries. Yes I know all about Eibach, anti roll bars, dog bone mounts et al. They were not really the target of my comments. I clearly stated  'simply lowered to the limit'  such as some of the pictures we see.

I bought an S3 because of its as built suspension set up not to spend more money on modifying it. Had I wanted a firmer, more sporty ride with all that brings I would have gone elsewhere. Indeed I used to be there quite a lot until the years and an ageing back led me away to a more comfortable ride.

Agreed but if you drive a Sportline I think you won't find it harsh so I would maintain that a 'standard' Superb has plenty of allowance to lower the car (15-20mm) without totally ruining what is a very compliant and comfortable car.   I certainly wouldn't 'slam it' or attempt to make it overly harsh, as you say, that's not what the Superb is designed for.

U think that is "lowered to the limit"?!???

Bhahahahha.

Sounds like u've not come across the term "slammed".........

The OP asked about options for lowering springs on his/her Superb.

That's wat this discussion is about.

It is not about people who don't see the point in lowering.

No one is asking u to lower ur car.

U like ur car for how it is.  Nothing wrong with that.  But don't go bagging people who like to lower their cars.

The H&R springs, in the pics I posted earlier still do it respectfully, and tastefully.  It does not ruin the car.

In fact, it improves the cars handling, without compromising the ride too much.

I know this topic is not about when ever OP should do it or not. I just asked for REASON why he would go that way and simply added my comment why I would not. I know I write too much, sorry about that.

See I don't get these comments about car leaning. In DCC sport mode I drove my car to and literally over limits few times now, in corners you would normally drive 50km/h i drove 120-130km/h. The leaning was really barely noticeable. The issue were tires which could not handle the speed (18's Hankook 235). I never, ever felt my car bouncing on Sport (DCC) it always firms up and you feel every little bump. Over the dirt terrain you can even feel the damn stones.

I drove BMW m4 few weeks ago, test drive, wasn't really VERY fast driving, but I didn't feel much difference compared to Superb's DCC on Sport. There was one ofc, since car is literally on the ground and the suspension is very very firm, but that was also the sitting position which you will never archive in Superb by lowering damn springs. I get it its personal opinion ofc, we're all different, that's NORMAL. But please do not tell me that lowering car like superb will gain so much handling and make car lean so much less.

I don't know if maybe DCC got changed in 2017 (software wise) but my car doesn't really bounce? The way normal works is perfect, it reacts to road conditions and basically makes "SPORT" on braking, accelerating and driving in corners. You can also feel handle bars and every thing in this car if you know what to look for. The setup is not perfect, but its not bad as most people comment. Comfort is really bouncy and sport is like super super too much. Feels like an Audi A6 without DCC.

P.S.: From my understanding, you can buy same length springs that are simply HARDER. That's what I'm talking about this whole discussion mostly. And lowering really is NOT the same as making car FIRMER/NOT BOUNCING.

Jeez guys. It is just an opinion! JRRS. I don't like the look and cannot see any point beyond style to do that to a road car. It is not for me to tell anyone what to do with their car and that was not what I was doing.
