day time running lights

Featured Replies

Hi all,  hope someone can help me with this. I am new to Skoda ownership and have inadvertently switched on what I presume are the day time running lights on my 2012 octavia se plus estate via the factory reset option on the dot matrix display. This was in an effort to sort another problem - which has since been sorted. I have followed the handbook procedure to turn the lights off by pulling the indicator stalk in toward the steering wheel for 3 seconds after ignition on, then down for 3 seconds (left indicator on ?), to no effect. There is no option in the dot matrix menu's I can find on my car for turning the lights off. I understand this should still be an option on pre 2013 Skoda's ?  The above indicator stalk procedure for turning the lights off appears simple enough, but if I'm doing it right should the left indicator come on ?   Any help appreciated before I take the auto electrician route ! Thanks.

In the maxidot it should be under "Settings" >> "Lights & Vision" >> "Dayl. dri. light" or similar. That's how I do it on my '61 plate Octavia :)

Never tried the stalk method on a car fitted with a maxidot.

Thanks Langers, but the only options I have in settings under "Lights & visibility" are ; rear wiper, lane change flash, and factory reset.  There is no "Dayl.dri. light" option unfortunately :-( . This is why I tried the indicator stalk method, which doesn't work. I wonder if this option can be unlocked or added using Skoda software ?

An SE Plus doesn't have combined fogs/DRL as standard. They were an option so they may have been factory fitted but I'd expect the on/off in the maxidot.

The next step is probably an autoscan from VCDS or similar.

I assume these are the lights you asking about?

No fog lights on mine, just the headlight/sidelights as you see here, which are now permanently on. The rotary light switch is now effectively redundant. Oddly, the audible security “peep peep” sound which accompanied the remote locking is absent, so I think as you say vcds is the only way to sort this out. There is a lesson here about not messing with the factory reset !

Excellent, those aren't daytime running lights which is probably why the maxidot menu is absent and the indicator method doesn't work.

When you move the switch to 'sidelights' do the headlights turn off? At a guess, the light switch may have failed which would cause the headlights to always be on.

The audible alarm "peep peep" can probably be turned back on by selecting "ata confirm" via the maxidot.

When I move the switch to sidelights nothing changes, remains as in the image. As mentioned, the light switch is now redundant. Your conclusion that the switch has failed is the same as in another thread I followed. Same problem description, he had it checked, new switch fitted, all ok.  It seems that as a safety feature the lights are designed to stay on if the switch fails. You were right about the "ata confirm" in the maxidot too, ticked it, peeps back on.  Well a big thanks to you Langers for heading me in the right direction, I'll get the switch checked out and see what happens. I will let you know what the outcome is. Thanks again !

?

What happens when you put on the Headlights & Sidelights?

Is that what you have in the picture, sidelights & dipped headlight.

What about Parking lights if you put off the ignition and put the indicator stalk down, do you have front and rear one sidelight

at the passengers side or drivers side working?

Again, remains as in the image, no lights control at all.

Could you have reset it to another country?

The lights are not on 24 / 7 with the key out of the ignition, so do you have 'Parking Lights' with the Indicator Stalk down and the car locked?

One front and one rear sidelight on?

That was my first thought after using the factory reset, but Langers says those are not day time running lights showing on my car, so that seems to rule that out. Also as he points out, there is no facility in my maxidot menu to turn them off, and the indicator stalk method as in the handbook does not work. That would seem to leave a faulty switch.

Haven't tried that.

If you have a rear view mirror with a light sensor on the screen. Knocking that off and breaking a cable can cause the headlights to stay on permanently I think with ignition. Happened on my 2005 elegance. I don't have auto headlights but the tech needed was partly their as I have auto wipers. Wire repaired problem went away.

I had a similar problem with my Yeti 12 months ago - it needed a new light switch - perhaps a faulty batch - who know!s

This is getting a bit technical for a man who was driving a 1965 Morris minor a few years back, I’ve got the number of a vw tech who’s offered his assistance so I think I will take him up on that. Thanks for the info though, every little bit helps as they say.

"Day time running lights" problem sorted. After purchasing the car I found that while driving in the city centre the horn did not work when someone fell asleep on a green light in front of me. There ensued some assessment of the cars fuses, and I found the horn fuse was missing. A fuse was quickly installed in the empty space, but then my headlights were suddenly stuck on. In my investigations I had replaced one fuse in the wrong place, so sorting this fixed the lights problem.  A bit embarrassing to say the least after the help I received on here !  :blush
